You love to eat, and so do I, but what would you say if I asked you to go to dinner with me, in the dark?
Some people might get spooked out and think I was crazy, but in this case it would turn out to be one of the most exhilarating, interesting, and sense’ful thing you’ve probably ever done - if you weren’t blind.
O’Noir is a local restaurant in Toronto which seats about 150 people You are welcomed a friendly staff of blind waiters, and expected to eat in the dark. Now, you might think I mean it’s candle-lit, but the truth is, it’s completely dark. In fact, they go out of their way to block all sources of light so that you can feel what it’s like, just for a moment, to eat as someone who was blind would. The experience allows your senses, mostly your sense of touch, smell, and taste guide your night. Without sight, you will notice that food tastes better, smells better, and it’s fun to touch it and figure out what it is you are actually eating.
If you need to use the washroom, a waiter will lead you to one in the dark, but don’t worry, once you get there it is lit up, so you won’t have to worry about missing a thing).
You are expected to tip between 18% and 20% but for Toronto that’s the norm, and let’s face it, blind wait staff sure do have to work more muscle to server you.
It’s quite the experience.
So if I asked you to eat with me in the dark, would you now?
