The Anuradhapura City of Sri Lanka is my Hometown. It is a sacred city which was established around a cutting from the ‘tree of enlightenment’, the Lord Buddha’s fig tree, brought there in the 3rd century B.C. by Sanghamitta, the founder of an order of Buddhist nuns. This city confirmed as the first political and religious capital of a kingdom that flourished for 1,300 years, and this city was abandoned after an invasion in 993. After that, the city was hidden away in dense jungle for many years. Before the few centuries, the splendid site, with its palaces, monasteries and monuments was recognized and then preserved under the project initiated by the Central Cultural Fund with the UNESCO aids. Considering the archaeological and historical value of this city The UNESCO was listed Anuradhapura as a world heritage city in 1982. The old city is now accessible once again for the visitors. So, you can visit those world-recognized, historical places within your visit to my hometown.
