Why Was My Google Edit Not Approved? (Photo Evidence)

Back on March 12, 2020, I made an edit to a local coffee shop that it is permanently closed down. I found out the hard way after driving 35 minutes that it had been shut down for over a month at that point because no one updated it on Google. So, I took a picture of the closed sign and included it in my edit. I have waited 3 months to find out today that it wasn’t applied. Does anyone know why Google didn’t accept it when there is literally a sign saying it is shut down? Do I need to re submit the edit?

Hi, @kpope17 , as you can check out in this article, Temporary product changes in Google Maps, due to "During the unprecedented COVID-19 situation, we are taking steps to protect the health of our team members and reduce the need for people to come into our offices. As a result, there will be temporary limitations and delays in how you can contribute on Google Maps as we prioritize critical services. In addition to that, there a lot of factors that can prevent Google Maps to verify a suggestion, and I invite you to read this article: Why is my edit status “Pending” or “Not Applied”?.

I apologize for any inconvenience,

@AlexandreCampbell Thank you for responding, however as I stated in my post, I made the edit 3 months ago before the temporary changes from COVID-19 begun. I have also made 3 edits since that have all been approved. I feel this is important as this place is shut down permanently, so people don’t keep wasting their time going there like what happened to me. Also, this affects my overall rate as far as edits go, because I heard that making edits that are “not applied” or not approved can make it to where I can longer make edits.

Hello @kpope17

As per my understanding of discussions through various threads, the automated mechanism approves any edit in most of the cases.
Further, as per my guess, the AI depends upon the evidence available through the attached photos & documents.
Thus, suggesting an edit on the spot helps in increasing the chances of success. One data which becomes useful in that attempt is the GPS coordinates of the photo attached to the edit. Believe, the photo submitted along with the edit had that essential data.

Another significant factor is the trust score of the person suggesting that edit & that improves after earning a sizable number of approved edits. I find you do not have any approved edits to your account although there are two place creations.
A useful approach would be to start with data correction & then move to mergers & deletion after having scored several successful edits.

Hello @C_T !

My location was on when I took the photo so there is GPS coordinates of it, is that what you mean? And the part where you said, “Another significant factor is the trust score of the person suggesting that edit & that improves after earning a sizable number of approved edits.” Is the main reason why I posted this and why I’m frustrated. The coffee shop is closed down with a sign literally saying that, and yet my edit was not applied and it’s affecting my trust score.

Also, I guess it’s not updated for you, but I have 3 approved place creations and 1 approved edit so I’m not sure why you’re not seeing that. Is there normally a delay in updating these things? I have submitted 2 more edits (one is a website and one is a phone number), that are pending so I don’t know why they weren’t automatically approved since you said most edits are automatically approved in most cases. Is there something wrong with my account? Lol thanks for your reply by the way!

Thanks for your reply @kpope17

When I search for Jolt coffee in Maps, currently that shows only two locations. One at Austin Tx and other at New Braunfels Tx.

The one at Dripping springs could not be seen. Can you share a link to the exact spot?

@C_T The one that says Austin is the Dripping Springs location. It is technically in Austin which is why the address says that, but they call it Dripping Springs because it’s closer to there than Austin so people realize how far outside of Austin it is. But the New Braunfels location is the only location there is now.

@C_T Just go to their website and you will see that the only Jolt coffee location is in New Braunfels.

Thanks for the clarification @kpope17

The place is claimed and then it becomes impossible for an LG to declare that as closed.

The owner should do that by displaying an update on Maps. I suggest sending feedback to the owner through the contact us option on the website.

Hi @kpope17 I think you’ve had some good advice on why the edit was not applied. It really does happen to everyone - don’t resubmit the same edit, that is seen as spamming. Having a single edit refused won’t affect you, having the same edit rejected multiple times might.

Interestingly having a location name in the business listing name is against the Maps rules. It does happen, but it shouldn’t, feel free to submit an edit removing the location part of the name.
