Why Scuba Diving? (for Indonesian)

By Cahyo Pramono

The question I gave to a diver from Egypt years ago. Instate of answering my question, he remains asking me a question, “Where you come from?” I said, Indonesia.

The diver then answering my question. He said, it’s not make any sense when Indonesian don’t think about diving. Because Indonesia is a country with thousand islands. And Indonesia has more water than the land.

Later, I found the data that says, "Indonesia is the biggest archipelago country in the world. The coastline is around 81,000 km. Its sea area covers 5.8 million km² or about 70% of the total area of Indonesia. The total sea area of Indonesia consists of 3.1 million km² of sovereignty and 2.7 million km² of the Indonesian Exclusive Economic Zone (ZEEI). "

Indeed, Wikipedia, write that Indonesia’s ocean area is 4.85% of the total area of Indonesia. It can be interpreted that the percentage of land area of the total area of Indonesia is 95.15%. Land area 1,904,569 km². Calculated mathematically, the total area of Indonesia is 2,001,648.97 km2. The area of the sea is 96,079.15 km².

Is it true that our sea area is only 4.85%?

Do you need a maritime coordinating minister and the Ministry of Maritime Affairs & Fisheries if you only have 4.85% of the sea?

My reasoning still cannot accept (or maybe something is wrong with me?).

Why Scuba Diving?

Indonesia comprises a large part of the ‘Coral Triangle’, an area which contains approximately 76% of the world´s coral species and 37% of the world´s coral reef fish species.

Indonesia has the highest coral reef fish diversity of the world.

Because the position and the geographical situations, Indonesian seas is one of the best for diving spots in the world.

Still asking why?

I still don’t know the best answer for your curious question, Oom. Maybe Indonesia since Orde Lama focused to even far away since colonialism, we famous by the agricultural.

But it’s very cool that you have the facilities to enjoy under water activity such diving. Maybe someday I have the same oom @ @cahyopramono :grin:
