I’m level 8 with many successful edits but arguably just as many automatically denied ones, too. I’ve tried correcting hours, with a photo, from inside the affected location - denied. Today I tried adding a new business that just opened yesterday, again from inside the business with 7 photos and all the details possible. Denied before even getting the email saying it was pending. Why does the algorithm suck so much and why isn’t there a way to petition for manual review? It’s ridiculous and I’m starting to wonder why I even bother giving Google so much data and labor for free just for them to waste my time over and over.
Agree. Even if you try again and again, it will deny it.
Sometimes, Google Maps blocks edits for certain types of places or specific regions, especially if they’re considered sensitive, @Jciesla. These could include things like government buildings, hospitals, ATMs, Banks, or locations with a history of spam or abuse.
In those cases, only the official business owner can add or update the place through Google Business Profile. It’s not about the quality of your edits—it’s just how the system is set up for certain areas.
Your contributions still help the platform a lot, so please don’t give up! Most of your edits do improve Maps, even if a few hit roadblocks.
Hello @Jciesla I too am going thru the same problem. I have successfully added many locations to Google maps but I hit the same roadblock you did last week. Even before I Received the email from Google saying it’s under review it was rejected immediately in my edits. I successfully edit approx. 20-25 places daily and add a similar number of roads but I cannot add one new POI with photo, store hours, website, address etc.
I have tried 2 different devices but no luck.
I know some one who adds a few. @WilfriedB are you having any issue adding places to guides?
We will get to the bottom of this.
If you open a topic in the Google Accounts Help Community about the location you are trying to edit, they will help you. They will ask for information about the location you want to edit.
Note that this forum is moderated by volunteers known as Google Product Experts, who are not Google employees and who only advise on best practices and interpret Google’s policies based on their experience.
My experience is quite the opposite @Jciesla. I get almost approval every time.
But perhaps its because I only do edits as necessary when the situation arises. I’m not currently attempting to mass edit.
Your suggestion is misleading @Murat. As a Google Product Expert myself, let me state the correct product forum for a Maps issue would be Google Maps Help Community.
@Jciesla a small trick I use is to fill the basic details.. like business name, category and location… Then submit it for approval… Usually I get those approved within minutes and then only I add details like photo , opening and closing time , and other details…my recommendation is to always add details seperately
Hello @Jciesla and @TerryPG.
Thanks for tagging me, Terry!
The last 2 or 3 places I added a couple of weeks ago, were accepted quickly. The same for name and position changes last week.
In addition what @Hope mentioned, I read a while ago, before accepting a new place listing Google searches the Internet for references to the new name.
Also @SarathUpendran’s suggestion to keep the number of details to minimum seems to help. Specially adding a photo seems to increase the possibility to be rejected. A while ago, this happened to me too.
I wonder, if @ErmesT can tell us more?
However, when @Jciesla says “edits”, does this include road edits? If so, this is a completely different story. The majority is either rejected or pending up to three months and then rejected.
I’m not saying you can’t get help here, I’m saying you can get support for these issues from the Google Maps Help Community. You can read the Gold Product Expert’s answer here.
That’s correct @Murat, but you originally posted the suggestion incorrectly as Google Accounts help community instead of Google Maps help community. Thanks for coming back to clarify.
@WilfriedB Just tried again on my tablet. Different POI different town ,location.
I tried entering minimum details without adding a photo. Did this at 6.57pm. Before I could get to my edits it was already there saying not accepted. At 6.58pm I received email on all devices saying my edit was “Pending” There is something wrong.
Maybe your right and @ErmesT could help.
@WilfriedB I think I have solved my issue of why I couldn’t add this POI. I have have had no issues editing POI’s, adding roads etc, but the last 2 places I tried to add they were refused and not accepted immediately.
So this afternoon I asked my daughter to help me. She is a local Guide level 5 and dabbles in guides a bit. She also tried to add this POI and was rejected immediately. She checked her email which said pending, but then checked her “edits” and it said “Not Accepted” With the number 5 following it. I checked my edit to the same POI from a few days ago and I had the number 4 following it. So I am now believing that 5 guides have now tried to add this POI.
This, I think is why the rejection is Immediate. It doesn’t help to get the POI on the map but to me it solves why my daughter’s and my edit were instantly rejected. Google is not accepting this POI, for some reason.
Screen shot of my edit.
Last summer I had a similar issue trying to add a POI. I ended up waiting a month or two and tried again and it worked.
Thanks for the tag, @WilfriedB
Hi @Jciesla , can you kindly provide a more detailed information about the place that you are trying to add?
Some places, as mentioned by @Hope , are rejected, because
In addition our edits are verified using the information publicly available online for that location.
So please can you tell us what is the place that you are trying to add?
I normally have no issues in adding new places, @WilfriedB , @TerryPG , and this month I am adding at list a place every day for the “green points” challenge.
Usually my edits are accepted in a few minutes, but I also had a place rejected instantly. What I know about that place is that another Local Guide tried to add the place before me (rejected) so probably my edit was considered as a multiple attempt to add a fake location.
What I know is that multiple attempts will cause an immediate rejection. If the information added are always the same, also the reaction of the filter will be the same.
I don’t want to disappoint you, @TerryPG , but it’s not like you say. The number you see in brackets indicates the amount of information entered to add the place. To see the list you must click on the arrow to expand the edit details.
Unfortunately, it’s a bakery. Nothing crazy, just a small innocuous business that opened up in my neighboring town to see macarons
Thank you for the feedback, @Jciesla
Have you tried the steps suggested here in the conversation:
Add only
- Name
- Category
- Address
A lot of photos and additional information need to be all verified, and even if a single element is not verified the whole edit will be rejected
That makes more sense now thanks @ErmesT
