I live in Chile - a country of mountains, volcanoes, glaciers, deserts, and high mountain lakes. Chile is a country of wild nature. Beautiful, delightful, charming … but wild. One of the main tenets of trekking in the mountains - if you want to see something beautiful - you have to go far. Not the fact that to go one day - often several days, to spend the night in a tent, to wade through the bushes, cross glacial rivers, search for paths, navigate by the stars … oh no, we have Google Maps. The latter disappears.
I always work the route in advance when I go trekking because it is not a trip to the city park - you need to understand where you are going, what is the duration of the track, what is the altitude difference on each track part, where to sleep etc etc etc… And it is very convenient to do it on Google Maps. And then download everything to Google Maps offline and not worry that you will stay without cellular signal not knowing where you are and where to go when nobody is around and you cannot find a path.
That is why I always try to mark new places and add information to Google Map not only in cities, but also in mountains - so that people following me can easily understand where the camping is, where the route starts, where it ends, where you can draw some water, and where to relax, enjoying the views. I also always leave comments on all remote places, preferably with photos and videos. This is not a restaurant on the street - often you go all day, carry a heavy backpack and come to a place that is completely unimpressive. When I could go to another place and not waste time … if I had read it, found out the opinions, looked at real photos of those people who were already there, had gone this way…
I understand that for most people its enough photos on their phone or camera about a mountain hike that they will post on Facebook or Instagram, and why take care of those who follow you? But it is important - it is important to share - places, opinions, information, advice. It always helps, makes the lives of other travelers easier, and sometimes can even save lives.
Do good - develop GoogleMaps in wild places - and this good will definitely come back to you
