Why I love editing places on Google Maps? We hate street addresses

In Mongolia, no one uses street addresses. It’s nothing “personal”. We just don’t get used to it. In my hometown Ulaanbaatar (where I’ve been living for some 25+ years) I only know a handful of street names. How so? It’s definitely not because we are nomads, it’s because we threw out something called “city planning” out of the window.

Wanna find the 34th apartment on the block? It’s right beside the 5th apartment. Then where’s the 35th apartment? You’re on a wrong block!

Only some 10 or 15 years ago, we only had our geospatial intuition to navigate through our city. Then Google Maps came to the rescue and became a crucial part of our lives. That’s why I love editing places on Google Maps. It feels like cleaning up the mess and helps lots of people along the way.

I hosted my first meet-up last week and I hope more people will attend it in the future

Let’s put things into order on the Maps!
