Q) Is there anything special about your city?
A) Yeah, there are many. Being a Hyderabadi is in itself unique. Be its dialect, the food, the ambience or the charisma this city carries. The blend of the culture here in Hyderabad is true depiction of India. Being a foodie, I personally like the variety that is offered in my city. Our food origins go back to as long as the 14th century. The Modern banquets are none other than the revised form of medieval system where Multiple courses would be prepared and served in a style called Dastarkhān.
It is evident that Hyderabadis still has that medieval touch when it comes to food. The Deccani cuisine as what we call now is an amalgamation of various cuisines be it Arab, Turkish or Mughlai. But, hey who doesn’t like Dosas?? Though amalgamation has given us splendid dishes like Pathar-ka-Gosht - Mutton/lamb seared on a stone slab found in Hyderabad, Dalcha-Mutton and Lentil delicacy, Baghara baingan - stuffed eggplants, we still haven’t let our taste buds be devoid of Dosas and Idlis. Who doesn’t know Ram Ki Bandi? the street Dosa place to serve our Midnight Dosa Craving, or our Love for Spicy Telangana Cusine offered at Chutneys and Rayalaseema Ruchulu.
I haven’t mentioned Haleem and our very own Hyderabadi Biryani or Irani Tea as they require special mentions, one of their own kind. The Pista House is a known ‘Lannister’ but Shah Ghouse is not less than a ‘Stark’ of the Haleem World. Shadaab’s Irani Tea, Alpha’s Biryani or Niloufer’s Biscuits, we care for them all. Recently, a new type of Biryani, Avakai Biryani is attracting mass attention. Mixing the cultures and cuisines cannot be better than this. If you know one better than ours, do let me know!
