My city is not on the current list of cities. Still, I have a follower.
The feature is extended to some LGs. However, the criteria are not known.
However, I do observe certain discrepancies in your contributions.
- 71 reviews are private.
- 190 photos are private.
- Out of the 1643 reviews, the master badge considers only 265 numbers as helpful.
- The count of likes to the reviews is unimaginable and appears to be through some assignable cause.
In my opinion, all these deficiencies reduce the trustworthiness of a contributor & hinders roll-out of some special features.

That’s funny. There is a saying " You can point out a speck in somebody else’s eye, but you can’t see a big pin in your own!
The Google Maps team has made that difficult in the new UI on the phone.
Otherwise, there was an option earlier “View your public profile”.
However, we still have that on a desktop.
Still, you can do that on the phone through a complicated route. But you have to remember a place where you have added a review.
Then, in the app, select the incognito mode.
Next, open the remembered place. Scroll to find the review against your name & then click on your profile.
Now you will see two sets of figures there.
Expand the photos & note the number.
Similarly, expand the reviews & note the number.
Next, click on your profile picture & see what the figures are against each of these. Do not forget to add the videos count in the photos.
The gap between these two sets of figures is the quantum of private content.
When the AI marks something as private, we do not lose the points & hence the count continues on the badges.
However, a significant increase in that would be unhealthy.
The phone route offers further insight through the additional information at the individual badges & hence I prefer that.

In addition to @Stranger9 's reply who suggested that you check Discover even more places on Google Maps, please keep in mind that this is a limited pilot and not every city is selected. In the article you can read “When selecting Local Guides to participate, we look for things like how often they share recommendations, and quality and frequency of their contributions on Maps. If you’re not selected to participate but live in one of these cities, keep an eye on the “For You” tab for great local finds from a fellow community member!”

The feature to being followed is not availble for the entire Local Guide population.
Only some profiles are experiencing this new feature.
Please read the following post where is very well explained, the roll out of this feature.
