I just had a look and it is sad to see Google Maps turning into social media like that. Also, very little respect is shown for the people that most likely have died there during the weekend.
Some years ago, I had the thrill of visiting this amazing place on earth myself. The outfit that took me and other tourists was very serious and safety-minded. Tragic accidents like this can happen and it is a calculated risk when one goes into active volcanic areas.
I would be VERY sad if the authorities were to prevent visits to this island from now on as I would go to White Island again, given the opportunity. As long as people that decide to go on these kinds of “high-risk” tours are well informed, I think it is a choice that we should be allowed to take.

Thanks @MoniDi removing the poor taste UGC should be a relief for the families of the victims.
Indeed @TheEagleEye - I would still go there, I’ve visited a live volcano site once before, I was informed of the risks and I made my choice.

@PaulPavlinovich I remember when I was about 8yr we go out in boat fishing aggressive waves and that island always worried me, I’m pretty sure they would be at uncles house Auckland maybe
