Which one is more crucial: The people you have traveled with or the places you have traveled?

I have always believed the fact that the places I am traveling matter more than the people I am traveling with. However, I was wrong, and I learned that five days ago. It does not mean that I haven’t gone any place more than once. Instead, it never occurred to me that people matter more. This sentence might be seen as I do not like people much. However, it is not that. I just… okay traveling on my own or with people. That made no difference for me after all. I did both many times and I always find a way to entertain myself or enjoy the environment I am in. I guess exploring matters more than who I am exploring with. I think you got the idea. I like people but I can live without them as well.

However, this idea has been changed by the experience I had 5 days ago. Last year, I went to Leros which is a Greek Island in the south of Turkey. It was a great place after all. I drank great coffee and sent a postcard to my friend in the US. I took great pictures and that was it. After all, I explored somewhere new and see great views. Can I ask for more? (I guess I should have known that there is always something better could be done or found.) The next time we came to the same place, I felt a bit sad because I thought I have done with this island. There are places you would not get bored even you have traveled many times. However, this island does not belong to this group.

In the beginning, every action we did align with my thought, we went to the other side of the island, we walked all the way to the windmill and come back. Since it was siesta on the island, we did not find anything particular to entertain ourselves. Thus, we thought of enjoying the emptiness of the island while drinking our coffee in Via Mare Pepe.

I did not drink the coffee there last year. Thus, it was something new and the coffees were quite delicious. However, there was nothing to eat at the café, so we, I mean my family and friends, (since I do not eat any sweet stuff) got some dessert from Paradosiako

(I have been this place twice and I did not eat anything at all and each time my friends have something there instead. It is quite sad that you might miss new tastes when you try to be determined on your lifestyle which does not include any sugar or pastry. I have taken great pics tho. Since my friends eat quite a lot of dessert, I have shared their thoughts about the desserts.) with the drinks we got from the café (They were totally okay with it. Greek people are nice.) I got my Latte and enjoyed sharing my reviews about the places we have been and reading the new book I have gotten. Everything seems nice, as I told you I enjoy and accept the condition I am in even though it won’t be what I would have done in case I am all alone. However, I am good at adapting the condition I am in. Until now, everything was similar to the last time I have gotten here. Nothing special.

However, suddenly something has changed. One of the group members got up and he told us that he and his wife are planning to go to the castle. The name of the castle is Medieval Castle and

it is located at the top of the island which means that we have to go all the way up. I was happy finally someone thinks of doing something interesting. I thought they are planning to go up there by taxi. I was even happier when I heard that they are planning to walk there! That would be a great way of exploring the island.

The first time I have seen the castle from sea level, I have thought no one would like to walk with me up to the castle. So, I did not even ask them. However, they have decided to try when they discovered that it is only 800 meters away. Even though it means going uphill about 800 meters, they were okay with it! Honestly, I did not believe people will go all the way up, but they did! I went before them to check whether the castle is already closed or not since it was 19.00 (7 p.m.). However, it wasn’t! we had 30 minutes more to see the view from the top. Luckily, I have arrived right before the responsible person was trying to close up before 30 minutes. She told us that because it is quite windy, it might be dangerous to be up. She might be right about the weather conditions, but we walked all the way up and we do want to see the view from the top.

The view was breathtaking. We took so many great photos. I took so many videos for my review as well to convince people that this view worth to climb all the way to top. We were all set until 7.30 p.m.

I thought that would be it and we will all go back to the sea level now. However, it was not. One group member mentioned about the windmills which are popular in many Greek Islands. So, we used the road behind the castle to get to the windmills. On the road back, we have seen a goat and sheep which seem like they were a couple, and I can swear that I have never seen such a beautiful goat before. (Since my father is interested in both goats and sheep all of my family knows a lot about goats as well as sheep.)At first, we were scared of goat’s horn. However, goats are quite coward animals. They prefer to run away instead of running on you which helps us to take some great pictures.

We had a great spot to have some great shot on benches! Honestly, I can even claim that I found the picture of “True Love”.

Why am I calling it true love? It is another long story but the long story short, I have been witnessing the love of Irfan and Ozlem since I was born, and I haven’t seen any other couple like them. They are the first love of each other, and they are living happily ever after since they got married. God bless their relationship.

Never mind. We got to the windmills and see a great view from there as well.

We used another route to turn back to town and we met up with the other part of the group who did not prefer to join us on the way up to the castle. I can easily tell that this was the best 3 hours for this trip. I always claimed that I could have fun with or without people. That might be right for some cases, but I need to fix my claim to this.

“You can have fun with people or without people. However, you had the most fun with the people you love and enjoy spending time with no matter where you go.”

What do you think?

Thank you so much. I agree with you but it took me while to learn that people matter more @Ivi_Ge

It can sometimes be very precious to take a step back and think about these kind of perspectives or our habits.

Thank you Serra for reminding us such an issue

Hi @Serraisil ,

I enjoyed reading every word of your story and felt as if I was part of it as well.

I agree with your opinion about travelling. If you have the chance to travel with your close ones, your experience will be at its best. If all of you are adventurous, you would challenge yourself and try to find as many paths off the beaten track as possible. This is my favorite part of my trips. I have also done solo trips and trips with friends. I can say that both are great and if I have to choose between a solo trip or not going for the trip, I would go. However, the ultimate option is to go with a small group of friends and enjoy this time together.

Thanks for sharing! Looking forward to hearing more of your great stories that you share with the community! : )
