Where to see Milky Way & stargazing in Cambodia?

Some people have a very interesting preference and spent so much time chasing it. Some spent a great deal of money for the gears like camera, motorbike, bicycle, birdwatching gears and staff like to fit their preference. I don’t have much to say, except travel which I take a chance whenever I can.

I know there are many places to see beautiful sky, sunset, sunrise, northern light/southern light or stars but I want to talk a bit those spots for stargazing or milky way in Cambodia.

The video is from my friend who is into night photography for almost ten years and this video has received his permission to share.

I have seen some of the milky by naked eyes - not all but I could tell how beautiful they are. However, I don’t have appropriate gears to catch them.

Where you can do stargazing?

  • Preah Vihear temple - with dark sky and vast sky on the temple situated over 500meters into the sky, it is very easy to spot million stars about your head.
  • Tonle Sap aka Great lake - the darkest sky allow viewers to see the most stunning view on the lake.
  • Veal Thom – located in the Virachey National Park, Koh Pang commune, Veun Sai district, Rattanakiri province - very famous site among extreme adventurers because it is very deep in the jungle and accessibility is very hard. So it is worth it to camp there and look at the very dark sky.
  • Bokor Mountain, Kompot: more and more international tourists are interested in the so-called galaxy Milky Way viewable from Cambodia’s Bokor Mountain, according to a notification from tourism ministry - January and May, the group of stars can be seen from 2:00 and 4:00 o’clock in the morning, and from June to December it begins the glittering from 9:00 to 12:00 at night.
  • Mrech Kangkeb mountain, Areng, Koh Kong, not just typical milky way. I did see comets coming down very often :slightly_smiling_face:
  • Tamoa village, Baphnom, Prey Veng – rural area with paddy field – off light are and that is in my hometown. When I was downstairs to take a shower, I did notice a wonderful milky way and it was an amazing feeling.
  • Phnom Kulen, Siem Reap, another great site for the stargazing as it is so dark and no wonder it is the sweetheart of campers :slightly_smiling_face:
  • There are more places around Cambodia, especially countryside where there are not light pollution.
  • Cardamom Tented Camp resort at Koh Kong province
  • I have made a list here based on my knowledge of where you can spot milky way or do stargazing while you are here.

Tips
To ensure an amazing stargazing experience, be sure to keep some important tips in mind before deciding on your preferred location!

There are some tips while going to such trip!

  1. Choose a spot with dark skies, one with minimal light pollution far from big cities and towns, such as from beaches, islands, mountains and lakes, ancient temples, or rural areas.
  2. The best time to see the stars in their full splendor is between ten days before a new moon to four days after.
  3. Check the weather forecast beforehand, clouds or fog will greatly ruin your chance of a perfect stargazing session.
  4. Bring things that will make your viewing experience comfortable, such as appropriate warm clothing, picnic mats and binoculars :slightly_smiling_face:

Siem Reap é um lugar que todo mundo deveria conhecer.

Um pena que em minha passagem por lá não pensei em tentar fotografar a Via Lactea.

Adorei o tópico.

@Fabricio_Rezende thank you dear, glad you were here.

Well, some sites such as temples may need a special ticket or permission if you want to enter at night but there are other spots that you can do freely like from islands or mountains. I don’t have the camera to catch such scene but I saw them with naked eyes. Absolutely stunning experience!

@MAHBUB_HYDER thank you dear, well it is kinda specific topic and not many people are interested in discussing them. I only know few stars but seeing the milky way is something very pleasant. Like I said, with flavoured weather, appropriate gears and very dark sky only to see them.

@helga19 thank you dear, I will be sure to send your wishes to him.

He is a landscape photographer and he has many stilt photos of landscape and :star2: . Since Connect is about originality, I don’t bring them here much even the owner permits it.

About the song, he sang himself and the music was composed by his father (music composer from 1960s). His mother is also a singer from that era. If you want to know or see more of his work, try Mardy Soung on FB or other social media.

@Rohan10 I am very happy to hear that my friend.

That’s a wonderful hobby, isn’t it? Do you have telescope to view stars?

There are sometimes when you escape the city and when you look at the sky at night from countryside, you feel amazed at how bright and beautiful they can be. I love the experience!

I don’t have my own telescope but I have joined one group which organized such sky observation activities. I am looking forward for upcoming event by that group after normalcy restored and I will share the moments here @Sophia_Cambodia .
