Whenever I find myself near beautiful sakura (cherry blossom) trees, I can’t help but take my camera out and start shooting. Last year, I shared some of my best tips for taking photos during cherry blossom season on Connect, including photographing just after dawn or just before dusk and exploring different angles. Spring has sprung again in the Northern Hemisphere and stunning sakura are once again in bloom.
In Google Earth Voyager, we recently shared some of the world’s most scenic sakura spots recommended by Local Guides like you. But some of the best places to capture cherry blossom trees bloom are in Japan. They even have their own word for it*—hanami—the* Japanese word for “cherry blossom viewing.”
Cherry blossoms only bloom for about two weeks, so it’s important to know where the greatest hanami locations are if you want to visit and take photos. Here are some of the best spots in Japan where Local Guides capture cherry blossom season.

@Christina-NYC I don’t know when I would be in Japan to capture those beautiful shots of cherry. I liked the photos of Arakurayama Sengen Park so much!
Great post. @Christina-NYC @ This is Miyajima island. We were a little early for the blossom but if you head south where it’s warmer the blossom season starts earlier. There is an official start to the season in each region declared by a local official. Blossom season had started but if we could have stayed a few more days the celebrations would have taken off
My favourite place is The Main Department Store in Moscow on Red Square.
There are a lot of artificial sakura trees.
We have cold climate in Moscow, the weather is not warm and of course we have not sakura trees in our region, but we admire the beautiful design in the Department Store–sakura in blossom.
Спасибо, что поделились фотографиями, они превосходные! Отдельная благодарность за снимок с котом. Я бы то же хотела попасть на улицу вишневого дерева.
This meet-up, Picnic in Tokyo was organized by @Anzu . Stay tuned for the recap!
As my region, Iwate prefecture is the north-east in Japan, our Hanami will be about two weeks later.
We’re looking forward to it. Of course, I’ll share it here;-)
Beautiful photos! I would love to visit those places in Japan at some point. Thanks for sharing your art. Sensibility, peace and harmony are evident in your pictures.
