Where I come from? Big dilema...

Have you ever asked yourself WHO are YOU?

From where do you come from?

And when I say Come From, I don’t mean where were you born. I’m talking about your ancestors…

This year, at home, we decided to gift each other DNA test. For many reasons, but mostly for health and curiosity.

We have had plenty cases of dementia in the family, so we anted check if we were at high risk, and also we wanted to know about our ancestors.

The results were amazing. About health, there is nothing to be worried. Apparently I’m one of those lucky ones who can eat loads of food and not getting fat easily. A bit of intolerance to fructose, that explain when I eat so sweet fruits I get a bit of tummy discomfort.

A funny fact from my DNA test is I am 4% British, I didn’t know I had British ancestors despite being living in England for 12 years. So, when someone tell me Im a foreigner, I say not that much, I’m 4% British, lol. The result says I’m 80% European with small percentages of Asian and African…

And this remind me that your DNA is your unique connection to people, places and histories all over the world.

I have found Neanderthal variants on my genes.

I have discovered that from my father side I got royal blood and it has been tracked to eastern Africa 275.000 years ago… time flies…

And do you know what is the most incredible thing, however I share genes with many people around the world, I’m UNIQUE, as any one of you are… We are connected some how, but still we are UNIQUE, even if you a an identical twin brother.

Have you done any DNA test? Just let us to know your findings…

Hi @Johnny11 , It’s very interesting, you’re all over Europe! I have been interested in doing a DNA test since they became popular, but I also felt that it would be not so worth it in my case as my family is very sure of our Jewish-Eastern European heritage. I didn’t know that it could also detect the risk of dementia, we have also had some cases in my family so it could be worth doing a DNA test for that. I might also find a surprise on where my ancestors came from

You sure have found many good things on your test, congrats on being able to eat anything without worrying about your weight so much hahah

Love your conclusion too, we are all connected in some way.

@Johnny11 This is a topic that fascinates me endlessly. When my husband and I have the money we would like to do a DNA test.

On my side, I have Spanish-Jewish ancestry on my maternal grandmother and mother’s side and Irish/English on my paternal grandparents and father’s side.

@Johnny11 interesting and I may do it one day too.

I know that I have Spanish ancestry from my mother side, from Spain. My dad, I heard his ancestry came from Saudi Arabia.

Wow, that is super interesting

And I like the thought of the uniqueness despite of all our cultural background.

Interesting @Johnny11 and agree with you that we are all unique but very much connected. Do you think we go way, way back to the same original male and female? I was told that if after some time you go back and check your DNA test result it could change giving you a different outcome. No need to do another test, just log in and check your results once again.

Hi @Jesi , the company I have used gives 125+ reports. When I write + is because technology and studies are evolving, and they keep updating the reports online at not extra cost.

As well as the DNA database gets bigger, you get more extended and precise reports.

You get genetical health predisposition reports (as diabetes, some cancers, vision, etc), but also carrier status report, that means that you wont have the health problem but you could pass it to next generations.

In the interesting or funny side, it gaves you 30+ traits reports:

  • Ability to Match Musical Pitch
  • Asparagus Odor Detection
  • Back Hair (available for men only)
  • Bald Spot (available for men only)
  • Bitter Taste
  • Bunions
  • Cheek Dimples
  • Cilantro Taste Aversion
  • Cleft Chin
  • Dandruff
  • Earlobe Type
  • Early Hair Loss (available for men only)
  • Earwax Type
  • Eye Color
  • Fear of Heights
  • Finger Length Ratio
  • Flat Feet
  • Freckles
  • Hair Photobleaching (hair lightening from the sun)
  • Hair Texture
  • Hair Thickness
  • Light or Dark Hair
  • Misophonia (hatred of the sound of chewing)
  • Mosquito Bite Frequency
  • Motion Sickness
  • Newborn Hair
  • Photic Sneeze Reflex
  • Red Hair
  • Skin Pigmentation
  • Stretch Marks
  • Sweet vs. Salty
  • Toe Length Ratio
  • Unibrow
  • Wake-Up Time
  • Widow’s Peak

and on my case, they were 98% accurate (probably I don’t want to face the 2%, lol)

Because we were sceptics, we used different addressed to check if the reports were easy to compare between the family members, and we have to admit, they were extremely accurate. It has been cases were the data is not accurate, but then some family mysteries come out as adoptions or not declared paternities… recently it has been a case of a lady which found she had Italian genes, when her parents were Americans, it came she was the result of an trip affair. So, my advice, get emotionally ready to surprises.

Connected, yes we are, not only by Google, originally by our genes…

Hi @LeeBee-SA , some of the DNA test are not cheap, however, they are giving good promotions around the year. We got ours on the Black Friday sale and got 50% discount. Right now the company we used has a £40 discount for fathers day. Always is good to shop around. Or use our loved Google to find discount vouchers or promos

That is a nice mix @SunshineNY . I knew about my Italian and French connections, but I never thought I had British blood or African/Asian…

To get a DNA test result its like to read a history book were you are the main cast! It tells you were you come from and encourage you to don’t repeat the mistakes of your ancestors through the health reports.

I really advice everyone to take a test.

Hi @AleAgui , at the end, probably we come from Adam and Eve… or Lucy as the science guys call the first woman.

For me it is fascinating also, that in this big planet, we are all brothers and sisters.

Different outcome? I don’t think so @AdamGT . What I believe happens is the technology and researches are always evolving. It has been 5 months since I took my DNA test, and they are always updating the data, because they find how some genes are related to facts. Your genes made a unique CODE for you, you are a mixture of your parents code. If you look at your brothers and sister, they could look similar but not equal, even could have some things similar to your parents. Your genes cocktail is only yours, even in identical twins brother it could come one has a freckle that the other one doesn’t.

Let me explain it in another way… Imagine you have a 4K movies streamer provider, but you have a “black and white” TV.

You are able to see the picture and enjoy it. Suddenly you decide to buy a technicolor TV, you will be watching the same movie but in better detail. And finally you get a 4k TV… You get amazed about how much detail you were missing about the full picture. The same is happening with the genes technology.

Science is still trying to crack the CREATORS code.

@Johnny11 the health predisposition and carrier status report could definitely provide very important data. And the other trait reports would be pretty interesting to get too, I’m pretty sure my Mosquito Bite Frequency would be the highest it can be hahah

It’s definitely worth doing it now with everything you mentioned, thanks for all the info!
