Let me explain by giving you my footsteps in Taiwan first. Being a native Taiwanese, born and lived here for several decades, I’ve been to the highest peak of Taiwan, Jade Mountain (3,952 M above sea level); expanding hotel business for a year in southernmost part, Kenting, where people hit the beach in Summer; worked in the northern capital city, Taipei; born and studied college in central Taiwan, spent my high school ages in southern cities, Kaohsiung and Tainan; and my mom’s hometown is the eastern part of Tawan, Hualien, where I spent my summer time when I was young and travel there often when I grow up. Not to mention I stationed in 7 sites around Taiwan when I served my military duties. Most of all, I stayed at around several dozens of hotels when I work on an online travel business. I travel abroad for private and business several times a year. It’s fair to say that I can recommend the best destinations for tourists.
Some travel guides would suggest places like: Night Markets, Sun Moon Lake, Old Palace Museum, Hualien, and Kenting, etc. They are all good places to visit. But when it comes to the best places for tourist, there are so many so it’s hard to pick the best. And there are different choices for different groups of people.
However, there is a comment which is getting more popular among tourists: “The Best View of Taiwan is People.” It was written by a Chinese reporter who visited Taiwan and came out with a feature story and a book with this title.
The comment may refer to the facts that people are willing to help when you are on the street and looking for directions; attendants in a restaurant will offer good services even though the tips are fixed at 10% or none; you get smiles and warm welcome when you walk around countrysides; and the hospitality you get when you shop at stores. You may say that you can find these in other countries. But you will surprisingly find how often you consistently receive such human touch all around Taiwan.
So, welcome to Taiwan. There are high mountains, good beaches, good foods, and good travel destinations. And you will enjoy the people you meet when you walk in the street.
Well, if you really need to identify one place, I’ll say… Night Market. There are Night Markets in most cities of Taiwan. Many booths and stands sell all kinds of small dishes and interesting stuff. And you can find delicious foods there… with fair prices. Night markets are normally crowded with people, and they are definitely walking streets where you can meet and feel the hospitality of Taiwanese people. If you prefer high-quality foods, there are Night Market in the business district as well… with a higher price.
