Yesterday I noticed a blank mail formatted with CM @AdamGT address under Local Guide Connect>Private Messages: FRIENDS. It looks like something new development. I would like to know for what purpose this is to be used.

@PrasadVR , I think it is very unlikely that new features are being introduced on the Connect platform.
I took a look at the friends tab in the PM system from my desktop. And it actually had the following sub-menu:
Status
Last visited
Latest post
Maybe you can’t see it on mobile.
The fact that you see Adam listed is because you give him friend status.
It is not an empty email, it is just him being listed to inform you about his status (online or not), what he looked at most recently, and his latest post on Connect (depending on which sub-menu item you selected.

Correction:
There are no sub-menu with these items:
Status
Last visited
Latest post
These are just headings and ways to sort your list of friends.
Just above Adam in my screenshot, you can click “Friend” to reverse the sorting order of your friends alfabetically.
If you click “Status” your friends that are online will be listed first. And if you click “Last visited” your will see those who visited Connect most recently at the top of your list of friends. “Latest post” is not clickable.

The “following” feature was presented first on Connect on November 7, 2019: How do I follow other Local Guides on Connect?
You will find the list of post of the Local Guides that you are following by clicking on “Following” in the main menu of Connect. In any case you will not be notified about new posts they may write.
As an additional feature you may find the people you follow also in your list of “Friends” on the “Private Message” section of your profile. In this way you can easily send a message to your “friends” by simply clicking on the small envelope on the left side of their avatar. In this way you don’t have to type their username if you want to write a private message to them
I know that the use of two different terms (Friends and Following) can be confusing, so I am tagging @DeniGu for her to escalate it, and maybe to have the same word (e.g. Following") on both sections of Connect
