Walhalla is a small town located 182 km East of Melbourne, founded as a gold-mining community in late 1862. At its peak the town was home to 4,000, today only about 20 permanent residents live and work in the town.
Take a walk through this sleepy little town, experience life back in 1800 with restored heritage buildings such as the old Post Office and general stores, try panning for gold, take gold mine tunnel tours, stay overnight at the varies accommodation sites or enjoy the local cuisine.
Another attraction if you are game, is the old cemetery. The locals encouraged us to visit the cemetery. Some headstone dated back to the beginning of the town.
I highly recommend visiting Walhalla during the autumn months. It will be slightly cold, but a walk around the town and coffee will warm you up.
Thank you for sharing this incredible location and those breath-taking photos. Did you use a drone in order to get such shots?
I’m amazed by the beauty of this place! The colors of the Autumn add a very interesting taste and atmosphere to the scenery. Was this your first time there? Is this a famous destination among tourists?
Walhalla is a great little town (or what is left of one) there are three great camp ground with accessible toilets. None of them have hot water.
There is a narrow gauge railway called Walhalla Goldfields Railway that runs from Walhalla to Thompson and return - this is one of the original narrow gauge lines and once had some of the steam locomotives that today operate at Puffing Billy.
Did you do any of the mine or ghost tours? They’re great.
