When editing Google Maps question

I walked more than 11 km one day this week. That relates. I add what I can to Google Maps. However, now that we can edit Google Maps in more detail again, do we add sidewalks alongside the roadways? I typed a similar question online with mixed results. I found both answers. If I use Google Maps to calculate the time needed to walk, that is the issue if I am taken on a longer route. I add sidewalks but only wish to add if that will change things.

One website said that is not required since Maps takes those into account because of the roadways (even if not there). The last was not mentioned but does happen in routes. Another article I read said to map the sidewalks on Maps since the sidewalks are there.

Will mapping a sidewalk next to a roadway make any difference? Also, should I? The location does not matter since I recall vacations and might map what I recall.

Hi @Androoh

I’m also a big fan of walking,

The answer is: “It depends”.

A walking path that is not following an existing road and is not already on Google Maps should for sure be added as a walking/biking path.

If a walking path along an existing road does not show up when navigating by foot and there actually is a walking path, then this should be added also. Instead of adding a new walking path along a road, I would mark clearly where the problem is. Use Google My Maps for this if it is not easily described with words. Then bring it up in the Maps support forum.

Normally, all roads will have space for pedestrians. Only extreme city planners decided to make roads that are for cars only.

I hope this helps.

Cheers
