“Ganpati Bappa Morya!”
The moment we hear these words, a different kind of energy fills the air. Ganpati arrives in our homes, decorations begin, the fragrance of modaks spreads everywhere, and the whole atmosphere becomes joyful. ![]()
But have we ever stopped to think…
Why do we bring Ganpati home? And how many small businesses and families are connected to this one festival?
Ganpati Bappa more than a festival
Lord Ganesha is considered the symbol of wisdom, knowledge, new beginnings and the obstacles remover. That is why we remember Ganesha before starting any auspicious work.
In Maharashtra, the public celebration of Ganeshotsav has a special history. Lokmanya Tilak gave the festival a public form with the purpose of bringing people together, creating unity and spreading social awareness.
Today, this beautiful tradition is no longer limited to Maharashtra.
Ganeshotsav is celebrated in different parts of India and also in countries such as Mauritius, Malaysia, Singapore, the USA, Canada, the UK and Australia.
Wherever Indians have travelled, they have carried this beautiful part of their culture with them.
But as a Local Guide, I see another beautiful side of this festival… ![]()
When Ganpati arrives, hope and new opportunities also enter the homes of many small business owners.
Idol makers become busy creating beautiful Ganesha idols.
Flower sellers see increased demand.
Shops selling पूजा and festival essentials become busy.
Modak and sweet makers get more orders.
Decoration artists and mandap decorators get new work.
Lighting and electrical businesses receive orders.
Dhol-tasha makers and artists get an opportunity to showcase their skills.
Photographers and videographers find new work.
Printing, flex and decoration businesses receive festival orders.
Beauty of fastival
And today, eco-friendly idols and sustainable decoration businesses are also finding new opportunities.
Many of these are not big companies.
Someone may be making Ganesha idols in a small workshop…
Someone may be preparing homemade modaks from their kitchen…
Someone may be creating beautiful decorations by hand…
And someone may be waiting for this season all year to sell their handmade dhol-tasha instruments.
Ganpati may stay with us for only a few days, but these few days can bring valuable income and employment to many families.
And this is where I feel a Local Guide can make a small but meaningful difference.
Instead of only adding information about famous Ganpati mandals, we can also discover the small businesses around us and help them become visible on Google Maps by adding correct information, photographs, addresses and details about their services.
Someone may search on Maps:
“Where can I buy a Ganpati idol?”
Someone may be looking for homemade modaks…
Someone may need flowers…
Someone may need decoration…
And someone may be looking for dhol-tasha.
At that moment, our small Local Guide contribution can help connect a customer with a local business. ![]()
For me, Ganeshotsav is therefore not just a festival of devotion.
It is a festival of—
Faith
Togetherness
Art and creativity
Environmental awareness
Livelihoods
and supporting our local businesses.
This Ganeshotsav, let us welcome Bappa with devotion…
and at the same time, give the small businesses around us a little visibility through our Maps contributions. ![]()
