When a Female says "I Can" to Local Cannon Shooting

In South East Nigeria occupied by the Igbo tribe, the sounds of Nkpunala (local cannon) is used to herald big occasions like New Yam Festival, Masquerade dance, Chieftancy installation,Burial of eminent personalities amongst other events. It is like a tradition and practice that only daring Men engage in because of the risk involved. Some of the operators have in the process of exploding cannons lost limbs some even paid the supreme prize.

I have been told that females now engage in this act, but on the 13th of April 2023 in my own community I went to comiserate with a relation who lost the mother at the age of 92, a feat that calls for celebration ( the type that deserves cannon shots) as I was about to enter the premises of this my relation I saw Mrs Chimezie installing these thick metal cylynders filled with gun powders prepartory for detonation. I was dumb founded, not just because a female is breaking jinx, but because her Husband is well known to me and even lost a limb in the act of detonating nkpunala.

While I was still amazed, other members of the community told me is no longer new and to my suprise all through the burial ceremony she detonated the cannons perfectly. I salute her courage and tenecity to forge ahead despite what happened to her husband.

I wish her accident free practice, for daring to deliver.

Hello my oga @ogewuru

I see you are getting active again on connect which us quiet nice. You have been busy with work life etc and have been away from connect!!!

A nice story in the sense that she was able to deliver without casualties. That shows you the fact that what a man can do a woman can do better.

What happened to her husband? You didn’t tell us that. Good to read some of these cultural practices from the South East of Nigeria. Thank you for sharing with us here on connect.

Happy guiding

Cheers

@ogewuru Yes, the local canon is now part of major ceremonies in the Southeastern Nigeria; majorly during funeral activities and traditional events like chieftaincy and coronation.

It’s still a rare sight to see women prepare and shoot canons but it is a slowly growing trend.

Well, they say what a man can do, a woman can do it better!
