Last year, I decided to meet my cousin and was travelling to his place over a weekend. While I was driving, on the way there was this Sri Velayudhaswamy Temple in Thandanthottam, Tamil Nadu which grabbed my attention. I saw a statue of a huge horse and a man standing nearby. I was curious and asked the people around, to which I got to know a interesting story from the locals.
Aiyanar - Guardian of the locals
Around 1000 year before, there used to be rampant thefts happening around the town at night by thieves, targeting the people who were carrying commodities and gold along the lonely highway that intersect the village. And it is believed, that the Aiyanar deity along with his horse and dog came to save the local people in human form and stayed along in the village to protect the people. The locals later built a hut for the deity to stay and it later became the place of worship.
