@rayalex The information in your Google Maps profile would be the most updated one, and is where Local Guides Connect take the information from. This synchronization is not real time, but done periodically.
So it may be that a few days ago/weeks ago, you may be at Level 7 in Maps (just slightly above the border of Level 6), but during these few days, either some of your photos, reviews were made private or related matters which caused some points to be taken off, hence bringing your total points to just below 5000. Your level in Connect will sync up shortly.
Regarding why points may go down sometimes: (just a generic note and may not apply to your profile)
Some of the time when contributions numbers go down, may be due to Photos and Reviews that don’t adhere to Google Maps Contributed Content Policy are subject to removal by the automated system filters or flagged by others. Such items that could be up for removal and or may be marked as private include duplicitous photo uploads or low quality reviews. When this happens, the contribution is no longer counted in the total contributions. You can check the situation by looking at your Maps contribution profile when logged vs in incognito mode.
There could be other scenarios when contribution number goes down, for example if a place gets deleted, contributions towards the place is no longer counted as well.
There is also the situation about if one deletes personal Google Maps activity records, which will remove points from Answers given on Google Maps. Read here
The above are just possibilities, and does not necessarily apply to your situation. If you find out other specific issues, you can share them here.
I would suggest you keep contributing as usual, and get back the 275+ points to bring you back to Level 7.
Stephen, Thank you for your detailed response. But this is very strange. I lost about 600-700 points. This is too much for accidental, protest, or erroneous deletion. These were mostly points for photos taken two years ago and reviews. Nothing violated the rules of publication, all the places were either tourist or ordinary city. My photos were viewed by more than 1 million people. They are of good quality and I made them personally. People like my reviews, they are extremely reliable. Is there any way to find out what exactly my points were deducted for?
Hello
Reviews & Photos turning private doesn’t cause a reduction in points.
Nevertheless, when these grow out of proportion & if the user doesn’t take suitable action, the automation may purge those & cause reduction in points.
However, I do not see that to be a reason here. Only 2# reviews & 10# photos are private that’s not only negligible & but also count in points.
The usual reason must be " Deletion of app history" through settings.
If the setting is to delete the app history after three or eighteen months, that will delete answer to the questions also & then causing irrecoverable loss of points.
That will cause a decline in the level. However, Connect will continue to show the max level achieved to date.
“If the setting is to delete the app history after three or eighteen months, that will delete answer to the questions also & then causing irrecoverable loss of points.”
Thanks. That’s exactly what happened! But when deleting the history, there were no warnings about such consequences! This needs to be corrected by Google in the future because I’m sure I’m not the only one doing this. A very strange addiction. Maps are one thing, but my action history is another. It shouldn’t be like this!
Thanks for reaching out to us! I am very glad to see you already received answers from our members. I wanted to inform you that I just marked @StephenAbraham 's comment as solution, since he provided a full breakdown of all the reasons that might lead to the loss of points. I would also like to thank @C_T for his help.
If you want, you can also take a look at the following page, where you can find further info about Points, levels, and badging.
I marked @StephenAbraham 's answer because it also included what @C_T mentioned, in addition to further information. For that reason I think that comment is more complete hence more beneficial for other members in the same situation.
However, you can always revert my decision and accept the answer you prefer as solution.
