The Local Guides programme has been invaluable to me over the last few years. Over the last five years I worked with local government as the deputy leader of the UK delegation to the EU Committee of the Regions. This involved regular travel across Europe to discuss cohesion, finance and environmental issues. I went to many places that I had never travelled to before.
Being on my own for these travels and with the rest of my colleagues having never travelled to these places either, the local guides community has been invaluable to me. I have been able to get handy tips on the key places to visit, especially when on a tight schedule, so that I can make the most of my time. I love eating in the recommended restaurants with real reviews and pictures and the history and culture of a place. I love finding out about the local highlights of a place, which allow you to truly be immersed into its culture and allows me to prioritise which sights I will visit to make the most of my short trips. It is truly an international and very special community, where we are uniquely placed to share our wonderful local knowledge.
Specifically, I have been able to highlight my favourite beauty spot in Barking East London, which people use every day. It has such a rich history and culture and I am pleased that I have been able to share its significance as being the cornerstone for many important events in England’s history. So, I was delighted when I was able to get the local bishop of St Margaret’s Parish church, Bishop Trevor Mwamba to agree to do a wedding blessing for myself and my husband before he re-located to Germany. A beautiful and magical place to renew my wedding vows last year.
