What The Local Guides Program Means To Me

What does the Local Guides Program mean to me?

It means Assistance. I have always relied on reviews to help me judge whether a place was worth going to, or would be nice enough to take my child, and it’s nice to think I could provide that same assistance for someone else. I have grown to enjoy taking pictures of where I am to help people see what a location looks like, or how their food looks served versus the staged photos you see in advertisements or uploaded to the website. I would love for people to be able to enjoy places as much as I’ve enjoyed them, and love sharing my experiences.

It means Clarity. Sometimes there is just only so much information about a place that is out there. Especially places that are locally owned, or newly opened. That is where Local Guides can shine. We can provide those details that might be missing, and fill in the gaps. And it is real people who are checking these places out, so you are likely to get a good variety of responses to how people feel about a place.

And finally, it means Community. When you have a whole community of people who are helping bolster good places and warn you away from the bad, it improves experiences outside of your home as a whole. After all, don’t we already take some recommendations from friends and family? You are more likely to trust a doctor your friend goes to and recommends versus one you googled up, right? It’s the same with the Local Guides. We are real people out there exploring parks, eating at restaurants, shopping at the stores. We just also try to give a comprehensive review of what happened and how things looked. And in my case at least, I’m not getting paid for this. There is something very fun about being able to excitedly share good experiences with the world.

Great post @KCox . I totally agree with you on all these points. I loved the way you said adding missing information is one way Local Guides really shine. It is so true. Little bits of information can make a big difference to lots people of people. I remember the first time one of my reviews got over 30 000 views. I was so amazed that I had helped so many people. Do you have a memorable moment from your contributions so far?

My most memorable contribution so far would have to be the first time I went to a lovely restaurant named Culvers. It had recently opened, and my family and I decided to stop in and have dinner. On a whim, I took some pictures and wrote a review, as this was when I first started out and was not very concerned with documenting everything. I was absolutely blown away with how fast the pictures and reviews got popular! Over five thousand views on the pictures alone! It was crazy to me to see the numbers and realize how many people had looked at those pictures and maybe decided they wanted to eat there too and enjoy the restaurant just like I did. It made me feel amazing that I might have been able to help some people want to come and eat at this place, as I had loved the food and the overall experience there. It was around that time that I decided I wanted to be a Local Guide and to review a lot of places that I go to.
