…it means I can share my experiences with people that really want to know about them!
I used to drive my friends and family mad by telling about the places I thought they should (or shouldn’t) visit, so when I stumbled across Google Local Guides it was like a calling for me. Finally, I had a place to tell the world about the places I love.
I had tried writing blogs over the years, including one about public toilets that scored them on their cleanliness, amongst other criteria. Not only did I lose interest in these quickly, because they were far too specific, but nobody read them either which defeated the object of writing them in the first place.
Google’s Local Guides gives me the freedom to post pictures of things I see, enjoy and experience along with reviews that may help others.
One of my favourite things to do is create published lists on maps for friends and family in areas that I have visited so they can get a head-start on all the cool stuff to take in. I spend a lot of time in Portugal so as soon as someone mentions they are going over and want some information I find out which area they are visiting and send them a link to a relevant map.
Most of my shared lists focus on foodie places because what’s better than trying the local delicacies whilst watching the world go by to a fantastic vista. One of my favourite spots in the Algarve is Club Nau or if you want to head further north to Lisbon, TimeOut is the only place to go for a truly magical experience.
For me, being part of the Local Guides program means I can be part of a bigger community that shares highlights of the good things in life. In a world full of negatively and depressing news, it’s fantastic to see that someone had such a great time they want to share it with the world. I really do feel like I’m part of something very cool!
