Dropping a pin is so easy, but sometimes it becomes tricky when you are listing/publishing an all new place on google maps, for a point locations it works well but for tourists attractions spread in Acres it makes no sense to drop a pin at the Center of the area.
Where to drop the :
-
The location pin should be placed closer to the most easily accessible road.
-
For locations with river/lakes around extra caution is required while locating the pin
-
A parking area is also a preferred choice for locations spread in large.
-
If the area houses multiple tourist spots with single access roads, it’s no wrong to drop the pin at same point.
Recently, I visited a Dam around Mysore, Karnataka, India.
lot of location pins dropped on google maps pointing to centre of park, that was 4 miles away from the vehicle drop location, eventually people ended up circling the whole dam.
WRONG:
Technically location was not marked wrong, just that was not accessible “Brindavan Gardens” https://goo.gl/maps/uk1vqPcmVg6ukBKU6
CORRECT:
should have been marked as below, targeting the entry gate.
“Vrindavan Gardens”

This problem can’t be fixed over google maps as well, you can’t remove the wrong listing or Mark it as closed.
comments appreciated Correct Location example

Hi @Abhishek_SLN
If you are confused about areas on Maps please enjoy this overview Shapes and Places - Guidance on where to add edits and photos including both flat and photospheres by PaulPavlinovich.
I sounds like the park should not be a point. So feedback would be the best option to create a major park.
Use these Steps to send feedback.
Secondly, finding multiple pins for the same place is a major issue that needs fixing. We should always do a text search before even trying to add a new pin.
Next, when finding duplicates there is the difficult task of merging and removing some.
You could take a look at my notes on Merge Workflow. Figuring out which pins to keep and which ones are the duplicates is not a trivial task. And we might need help
from the Maps support forum
to merge popular places which are notorious for not accepting edits.
All of these issues should be addressed before figuring out where exactly pins should be dropped or moved to.
When there is only one pin we should know that places on Google Maps can have extra GPS coordinates for the main “entrance” that we can not edit but is used by the navigation. We could be prompted after navigating if this was the best place to arrive. And only then we can influence where the navigation should end.
I’m sure there are many more aspects that could be discussed in relation to where pins should be positioned best. And I hope others will chime it and share more on this sometimes tricky question.
Thanks for starting this discussion.
Cheers
Morten
PS I have a faint but happy memories of visiting Brindavin gardens some 40 years ago

@MortenCopenhagen Thanks for your perspective on this, some of the links were worth reading.
looking forward to learn more from your experience.
What a superb article and written at the right time
Such a pin placed inside a fort in Delhi took me to a park outside that was not related in any way to the fort but was geographically closest to the pin, a waste of 1 hour just to enter the fort whose entrance was lying somewhere else and was not marked at all on the map. Ultimately local help came to my rescue.

@TusharSuradkar Thanks for seconding this issue.
Your Delhi fort infographic is just perfect to explain this whole problem.
