Warm greetings from Dubai! As we all approach another exciting year with Local Guides Connect, and I thought about what I enjoy most about sharing. For me, I love finding out about a place and sharing with others. Which made me wonder – what exactly makes a location a hidden gem? I started a list for Dubai of places that weren’t typical, the kind of restaurants you might not find in a tour book, and wanted to know what all of you thought, or if you had some hidden gems from your own hometowns. As a contributor to Local guides, I believe finding and sharing hidden gems around the world is something only that our community can provide. Maybe it’s a new restaurant, or venue, or chef that you like. Maybe it’s something to do with a passion of yours - however you look at it, I’d love to see more ‘Hidden Gems’ from around the world. The thing I also like about Hidden Gems is that it doesn’t matter what level of guide you are, because you’re an expert on your location.
For me, there are some considerations when defining a Hidden Gem:
-
A place not very well known or off the beaten path.
-
Something only locals know about (for now).
-
Some element that sets the location apart – a superlative of some kind.
Anyway, I would love to hear what your suggestions are! For me, the best example I can think of is High Joint, a five-seat burger restaurant in Dubai. It’s nothing fancy, but the burgers are absolutely out of this world, and well worth a trip if you’re in town. I basically tell everyone I know about it, and I’m asked a lot because I’m also a food writer.
