I started my Local Guide experience 4 years ago rating one of my favourite places in Budapest, the new Music hall, MÜPA.
Since then I started to rate places, but until last month I had no idea that I am a Local Guide and what I missed not being part of Connect community.
I would like to make you clear what exactly means to me to be a Local Guide. Let’s get started?!
HELPING EACH OTHER
It means sharing what we know and what we think. Only giving a rating and writing a sentence about our experience is a great help. And if we attach pictures, what isn’t a big effort, we turn our evaluation much more useful for thousands of other people. A great example of that happened just recently: I and my partner decided to have a dog, but we are living in a blockhouse without a garden. At first, it seemed like our social life will change drastically. We thought we couldn’t go out with friends anymore, but either inviting them to our home or going out to public spaces.
Suddenly, it came to my mind to search for dog-friendly places in Budapest through Google Maps. I was trying to find good places and basing myself on the reviews shared by other people.
By searching on Connect I found this suggestion Pets allowed description for any kind of places shared by @FrancM, which I find useful and I would appreciate this change. I feel this truly represents the helpful value of Connect.
Until this feature will be implemented, to be solution-oriented I created a basic maps list with great pet-friendly indoor and outdoor places for people who visit or live in the south of Budapest.
CREATIVITY
In my whole life, I tried to be different than others. I was never the biggest fan of any celebrity. I found always some alternative ways of enjoying my life than the average. For example, most of my friends liked to play football and I was playing basketball. Most of my mates were watching series and I was reading books or playing with cards in the rainy days…
As a current marketing student, creativity plays a huge role in my life. Creating and discovering different things like the usual. I truly believe that Local Guides give a great opportunity for the users to use their creativity by writing reviews, taking pictures that they can share, or creating a new Google Maps list. The creativity gives the highest chance to make our content original, a core value of Connect.
As I mentioned, I really like creative places and I’m also a big fan of locomotives. If I see some railway-related place, like an old locomotive or a train designed restaurant in a city, I make sure I can visit it and try it out.
If there would be anyone else who is attracted to this kind of places here is my brand-new list about locomotives places in Budapest.
BEING WORLD CITIZEN
I’m very happy to be a Local Guide since it’s also connected somehow to my past studies. When I was at secondary school, I was studying Tourism. Aiming to be a Tour Guide in Budapest. Unfortunately, I never made it until the certification for being an official guide, but to be an unofficial guide is also a lot of fun.
Honestly, I would say that because I consider myself a world citizen it turns me more in a global than local guide. Being a global guide means to be interested in world issues and to enjoy taking responsibility for improving the world. I believe in my ability to make a difference. Right after the high school, I decided to move to Germany to try out myself in a new environment and learn the language. After 2 years I came back to Hungary and started University. At the same time, I joined to the worlds’ largest youth-led organization: AIESEC. Throughout my university years, I had the chance to be up to date about the happenings around the world and take a role to change it for better. Not just reading and talking about it. I participated in a 1,5-month-long volunteer exchange in Egypt, in a small city, teaching teenagers how to train in a gym. This experience taught me a lot. You can check more about my experience in Egypt HERE.
I believe adding new places or adding pictures for some locations can be also very impactful.
BEING THOUGHTFUL
With the last part, I would like to reflect on the core values of Connect.
Once at AIESEC I got a reward from my leaders for the great performance of my team. The book I earned was nothing else than: “How Google Works”. I really liked that book and inspired me a lot. I believe the way How Google works mad also possible the creation of Connect.
Thank you for being welcoming and accepting me in the club. I just got to know about this community because I’ve received an invitation to the Connect Live 2020 event. It made me excited and motivated to be an active participant in the community and the conference. So, I started to search on the platform. First I read the content of @CaroGuiniazu about Being a Local Guide in times of crisis and I found there the suggestion of @CeciliaRatto “New to Connect Live? Get off on the right foot by reading this wonderful post. New to Connect? Start here!” I clicked there, I started my story and here I am.
I’m very thankful to @AriMar for “How do I write a post on Connect?” and to @HiroyukiTakisawa for his “Helpful tips for writing a good post”. I hope my content could meet with those points.
This is just the beginning. I promise.
