I have been part of the local guide for some time now, and it has made a huge impact on my life. Being a local Guide, to me, is an honored service to my community.
Knowing my fair share of the Local people of Ghana, I’ve noticed that most of them are not familiar with google maps, but many other people are familiar. Again, I realized people (mostly tourists) needed genuine reviews on places they may like to visit. I, therefore, made it a point to give honest reviews and ratings to all the places I have visited. I also visited popular public places I hadn’t been before and gave a review on their services, wheelchair accessibility, and ratings. I added places and pictures that needed to be on the map as well.
It feels good to put the adventure energy into good use. After some time, I noticed the impact this “hobby” of mine has made on people. It turned out my reviews and contributions helped the business owners as well. One Cafeteria manager personally contacted me and shared with me how my reviews have helped her get more business. She even gave me a free treat at her cafeteria which I enjoyed with my girlfriend and my nieces.
Also, having been a part of Local Guides for some time now, I have realized how real a community it is. The monthly and yearly email updates I receive help me keep track of my progress. I also get the chance to interact with local guides worldwide.
To me, the local guide has helped me bring my city to the world, as local guides worldwide are bringing the world to everyone. I have always been a fan of the saying of Mahatma Gandhi which quotes: “The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others.”
By serving through contributions, I have been self-fulfilled!
