Well! It’s been quite a steep learning curve organising a meet up and THEN writing up the recap.
About the recap or recount of my little outing
What I’ve discovered is that you are limited to 20,000 characters. That seems quite enough BUT in reality, larger photos count for more characters. Silly me, I thought characters applied to actual text. Ha ha. But no, it also applies to images.
SO, after writing and inserting photos and laying it all out nicely, I had to redo almost the whole thing to make it fit into 20,000 characters.
Next time, I’ll know - that’s IF I remember what I’ve learnt this time.
About the organising of it
Being able to make three announcements was great.
I saved them for the last couple of days - in case I had to change the meetup location because of weather. Which I had to do and was very relieved when the local guides turned up.
Another thing, if you want to include your map route URL you’d better have prepared it before hand so that you can include it when you do up the official Meet Up page. Because you CANNOT edit it later.
BUT you can alter the discussion page in Local Guides Connect.
Confusing? You bet. It’s confusing because BOTH are called Meet Up. Or at least say that in the title.
So, One is
https://maps.google.com/localguides/home
https://maps.google.com/localguides/meetup
and the other is
https://maps.google.com/localguides/home
https://www.localguidesconnect.com/
https://www.localguidesconnect.com/t5/Let-s-Meet-Up/bd-p/MeetUp
The former is the parent you could say while the latter is the child.
And then the child has a child - does that make the former a grandparent then?
So what I’m writing now is the grandchild so to speak.
What it is seriously lacking is a drop down menu that has a directory tree that tells you exactly where you are. Without a map it is hard to see where you are exactly.
I could be wrong but it appears that once you click on Local Guides Connect you are sent to a different site.
Is it the right brain and left brain thing and they meet in the lounge?
But the problem is that they have very similar names.
It’s like when your grandpa is called Geoffrey and you the grandson is called Jeffrey.
Whatever, I’m writing this as a sort of reminder to myself for next time!
Did I enjoy myself?
You bet I did.
I have to say though that I couldn’t have gotten this far without the help and encouragement and step by step guidance of Melbourne’s more experienced organisers as well as the participation of Melbourne’s great bunch of fun loving local guides and photographers.
Thanks for your enthusiasim and company!
OK did I keep to the 20,000 characters limit? I hope so, I’m about to hit post!
