The most interesting story: One wonders how Google knows there is a bakery located in this alley!
About ten years ago when I was 19 years old. I had just started university and that was when I was first introduced to the internet :). Because we did not have free internet at home and my Dad was against it. My view of the world and I were very different then today! I started using Gmail, social media, and more. The most interesting thing for me… no doubts… was Google Maps. It was like a window to the world! Visiting cities, places, and monuments through an app… I was fascinated by Google Street View and was able to virtually visit almost every Capital in the world
Apart from motivating me to explore the world around me in great detail and connecting me with friends all over the world, it has allowed me as a Local Guide to edit the Google Maps in the city I grew up in. The fact that I am able to contribute to a global platform and help Google create a accurate representation of our world was very fulfilling to me. For example, I edited all street names and squares in my town… then when I published them onto Google Maps, I showed them to my family and relatives. The reaction was: Oh my God! How does Google know these specific street names? or where all the shops and bakeries are? Although I had added all this information to Google Maps, my father did not know therefor he would commonly say, “Hey son, be careful what you do in the backyard; they are watching us!” A lot of times I would have to convince my middle eastern father that we weren’t being watched by explaining, “I’m helping Google Map add details to the map of our town to allow people from around the world to explore and learn more about our town. There is no Big Brother! No need to worry”
From that day on my father was proud I was “working for Google!” Something like teleworking… He started to talk about Google Maps much more often!
That has so far been my main accomplishment working as a google local guide, and I hope to accomplish more in the future!
