What is a link and how to create and work with them in Connect using an Android Device

This post is formatted so that it is best viewed on a mobile device

Being comfortable with creating and including links in your Connect posts (or replies) or adding into the T100 system is an essential skill to master. The idea of copying a link address and pasting it somewhere else or creating a new link is universal; so before going on with this post you may want to read some previous posts that were written by far more experienced LG’s than me.

Steps and videos explaining copying links from Maps to Connect using a Android device

Already familiar with the idea of hyperlinks and link addresses? Skip to Part 2

Part 1:

What is a link and how to work with them?

Everything on the internet has an address and you can create a link which is a reference to the location of something that can be viewed in your browser. It is not the thing itself, but it contains the information you need to find it (the address). Do you have a shortcut (something in your browser or on your desktop) that takes to your email or Facebook or a favorite website? These are all links. Usually we see an icon or some blue text (it may be underlined) that, when we click on it, it takes you to something else. It may open in the same tab or window or it may open in a new one.

There are links to all kinds of things

Websites

Photo

Video

Document

A Connect post

A Maps location,

Etc.

You can create your own link to any of these. .

In the beginning an internet address looks like this

Google Photos

You can copy and paste it into your browser (Chrome or whatever you use) and it will take you to what is at that address. This is not very convenient and it is easy to miss part of the address when you copy it: so sometimes the address is also a hyperlink (link is short for hyperlink).

https://photos.app.goo.gl/SsVzvxhBCj9RkbpJ8.

You can tell because the address is now a link, because it is now blue and may be underlined. This means you can click on it (exactly how you use it varies somewhat depending on your device and which app you are in) and it will take you to the same address as before. In this case it is to a photo of my Hummingbird feeder that I took today.

The link is perfectly usable, but it is long and kind of ugly and it really doesn’t tell you much about what it refers to.

The best solution is to type some text and then add the link to the text.

So here I type

My Hummingbird feeder

And then I add a link to it and it becomes this;

My Hummingbird feeder

It is this method we use in Connect.

So how does the magic happen?

Part 2: Creating and using links specifically on Connect using an Android device.

While I’m sure you will enjoy the photo of my hummingbird feeder, I am going to focus on how to create and use links when writing posts or replies in Connect or entering info into the T100 system, when using an Android device. The example we’ll use is adding a link to my star video to this post.

1) Navigate to your star video post (this link goes to mine)

2) At the bottom of the post is the menu/icon

Tap on that.

3) On the menu that opens from this press and hold on Permalink

(it may take a couple of seconds)

until another menu pops up.

4) Tap on the top item, “Copy link address”.

You are done here.

Important: Once you have copied the link (address) you can use it both in Connect and the T100 system, or anywhere else. We will come back to this later. (see part 3)

Next, go to where you want to create a post or reply and click on “Reply”.

Type the text that you want to attach the link to:

My Star Video

Then select the text (it will be highlighted)

Then click the link icon above the text input window (the fifth from the left).

In the window that opens, press and hold in the URL box, until the paste option shows up and select paste, and then save.

The text should now be blue and underlined.

When you have finished the post select submit to save your post.

If you have copied the link to use in the T100 system, instead of creating a post in Connect, open the T100 system and login. Paste the link here.

Part 3: Ways to make creating and using links easier (both on and off Connect)

As mentioned above, once you have copied a link address, you can use it in Connect, the T100 system and any other place you might need it.

Consider creating a document where you keep copies of the links that you need to reuse. I use Google Docs because creating links is straightforward. Use the above process to copy a link address to your clipboard. Open or create a document in Google Docs. Then type the name you want for the link, Say

Star Photo.

Then you select the text

Press and hold the Control Key (CTRL) and type the letter “k”.

This opens a dialogue box where you can paste the link address, and then click “Apply”

Afterwards it will look like this

Star Photo

Do the same for your Star Video. Now you won’t need to go to your post and copy the link address the next time you need it. You can copy and paste these links into your posts on Connect. You can even open these links directly from your Google Doc.

You can do this for any other thing in Connect you want fast access to.

I find it more convenient to write my Connect posts in a Google Doc because sometimes I have lost a post while I was in the middle of working on it in Connect and I can create all my links in advance in the document.

Please use your ability to copy link addresses of Connect posts when you reply to a post. It is extremely valuable and helpful to include a link to the specific post that you are responding to. For example, in this post @tony_b is talking about the range in the number of views that his videos have. I’d create a post like this:

“ Tony, I was reading your post on video views and it made me go back and look at mine, etc, etc, etc,” So if you read my post you can go back to Tony’s to see exactly what he said.

One last thing about the link address of your star photo, video or 36****0. You only have to paste this in one time. It doesn’t change. Each month you update your star post in the album and the link in T100 stays the same. The only time you will need to change the link address in the T100 system is if your star changes. Then you create a new post in the appropriate album, copy the link address for this new post and then replace it in the T100 system.

@PrasadVR ,

Good catch. I have fixed the link. As it says the post is still under construction ~ the formatting has been a real challenge. I’ll let you know when I finish it up.

Would you be so kind as to remove the screenshot from your post and shortening the text a little bit? I just don’t want it to confuse future readers.

Thanks

Thank you for your support. It seems to be an issue for a lot of guides, who then tag AdamGT for help. He explains all of this in his intro to the leaderboards. I think the problem is that his intro/instructions is so long, people don’t bother to read all the way through it. Your pointing out about the info icon in the T100 system is very useful.

Thank you dear friend @Rednewt74 for your hard work in explaining the link featuresin simple steps with images how to create a link and use it. You have also very well explained with examples how to use in Top 100 star video post . Some time back you have mentioned about this in your post.We find @AdamGT and @tony_b frequently use this link in their posts.
