Connecting with other local guides in your vicinity is indeed a big problem. Loads of local guides have pointed this out quite frequently to the Maps team, and even made suggestions on how this could work, but unfortunately without a direct result.
For the time being: try finding other local guides via social media - there are e.g. regional groups on Facebook.
