I am not aware about this local guide program but I know about it when I was started SEO for my company in e-commerce. I love adding places and images to Google maps as it helps local, visitors & others to find place easily with proper information.
Its for me special when i shift to Ahmedabad city with my wife. I only teach once to use of Google Maps & she wife was go everywhere in city by use of google maps. She was travelling to a new place, alone. Then she teach her Friends & other family member to use of Google Maps.
Local guide program is a nice program to build a community who loves to roam around and put information to the right place. As a local guide, I try to cover information as much as possible. When I go to a restaurant, I check the reviews from Google maps which help me to choose where to go and where not to.I did not forget to post on Google Maps some photos. Thereby received quite a lot of support online and in real life.
The best things is that its free, easy to use, easy to find, comment, post, write review.
