What does the Local Guides program mean to you?

The Local Guides program is a genius way for locals to share their knowledge. For myself, growing up in a small town in South-Western Ontario (Canada), I never was able to explore much. The only real travel I had was during school, whenever we were in computer class, I would open up Google Maps and ‘travel’ around on Google Street View.

Sure, we did family trips to the ‘city’ or other towns, but I never traveled extensively until 2015 when I was able to go to Universal Studios & Disney World (Florida, USA) with my family. This was the first big trip we had ever been on together, and it was such an eye opening experience.

The following year, I traveled with my school to Costa Rica; visiting San Jose, Cartago, Tres Rios, Quepos, and Manuel Antonio. Never before had I traveled alone and never before had I left the comfort of my North American life. It was around this time that I started to document my travels, the food, services, and accommodation on Google Maps. It was a way for me to share my experiences with those who did not have the opportunity to visit.

Now, I use the Google Local Guides program to speak out and give advice to locals in Toronto, the city where I am currently living. I review services (honestly), restaurants, accommodation, and tourist hot spots. I make sure to review even when I leave the city and travel to places such as other small towns or to New York City. I always review with key words to help businesses stand out and I always make sure that my review is honest so that the next person knows what to expect. I even help out businesses by reviewing their contact information or map marker placement. It gives me a way to give back to my local community in a way that not many others know how or do.
