What does the Local Guides program mean to me?

The Local Guide program gave me purpose during a really bleak moment in my life when I returned home from college to a local economy that has needed to transition from the coal industry for 50 years. I am from the Upper Kanawha Valley in West Virginia. My local economy needs to embrace sustainable development and utilize more technology. There are literally no prospects for employment and a career in most of the local communities now that coal is economically obsolete. Carbon reduction and awareness is appositely necessary, but America abandoned these communities and demonized the hard-working poor families when they were no longer useful.

When I came home, I started making My Maps that highlighted the need for revitalization and economic transition that allowed me to have technical and creative outlet. My goal was to help local economic revitalization through expanding digital footprints. Many of the local businesses did not have their correct information on Google Maps. I went to several small business to help them understand the resources Google offers. Finally, by participating in Local Guides, I have learned skills which has helped me manage my social anxiety while simultaneously giving me a pathway to contribute to the development of my local community.

Hello @LucasDC ,

Welcome to Connect!

Keep in mind that one of the requirements for Connect Live 2020 was to share your post on the Local Stories board. Just to let you know, I’ve moved your post there.

Hi there! Nice to meet you! My family is from Parkersburg, W.Va. Such a beautiful state. I treasured my summers there growing up.
