I moved to Canada in 2016 to further my education in the field of Psychology. I had never traveled there before, had no family there and frankly had no idea what I was getting myself into. This was a move I had to make as I had to find a way to help my youngest son. He had been diagnosed on the autism spectrum and we had no resources to help him in our home country to help our son get the treatment he needed. I had a degree in psychology so it was much easier for me to enroll in school. What made this even worse was that I had to leave my family for what became 6 months until they could join me. When I came here I was literally lost. Google became my best friend and saviour. I was map my routes to and from school and when I got lost I would use the ‘walk’ option to navigate the streets to get back on track. For some reason, I would always walk the wrong way, realize I was headed in the wrong direction, then turn and start sprinting to catch up time. I’m an introvert so I preferred to use Google than asking for directions. On the other hand, I was also terrible at directions (“…go south…” who knows where south even is!!!). Because it helped me so much, I started using Google a lot more for honest reviews on restaurants, shops and other places for entertainment. This was when I really started to post my own reviews. I really wanted to help others in the same way others helped me navigate this enormous city…it’s the least I could do. Google would also track my locations and prompt me to post which peaked my interest more. When my family came I relied on the local guides community even more for kid friendly activities. Local Guides helped me in the beginning of my journey when I was most alone and I still use it today. Now, I don’t go anywhere unless I read reviews and I do my part to help other people an businesses find their place in this big big world.
