Hi, I am Lok from Hong Kong.
Indeed I am a new member of Local Guides Connect, and I am going to share my story with everyone reading this, heart to heart. In the last 4 years, I left my footprint around the world, alone or with pals. As a Chinese saying goes, “Travelling brings about far greater benefit than mere book learning”. Another way to state it, “He that travels far knows much”, said historian Thomas Fuller.
I became a local guide since my first year at university, where I was finding meaningful things to do. I was available, and I had the time to explore places to go and shared that experience with people. At the year my local people had a hard time, everyone faces huge pressure from living. My idea was that maybe once they have the opportunity to relax and looking for places to go, they will find my comments useful and go there to enjoy their private moment. That is the start of my story.
Being a teenager, all I wanted is to travel around the world and explore the countries that I have never been to. I want to record everything down when I am on the trip, exciting or boring, and I pretty much did. Sometimes when I am depressed, I look back through those photos and clips I took on the trips. It drives me to look forward to my next trip, another chance to explore the mysterious world.
Wherever I go now, I always have my phone in hand and take as many photos as I can. I am pleasantly surprised by the fact that one of my photos hit 100 thousand views very recently. It blew my mind that my photos posted on Google Maps have been seen by that many people. And maybe this photo helped anyone of them to decide their next destination. As one of the contributors to Google Maps, I seek comments from other Local Guides when I travel overseas as well. Their work truly contributes to how easy we can find what we want in Google Maps.
After what I have done in these years, I still believe in my decision to join local guides. Indeed I enjoy sharing what I see and experience with people. I think it is a good way to share happiness with the world. I want to participate in the event this year. I want my knowledge enriched and skills using Google Maps improved. Last but not least, I am eagerly anticipating to meet other local guides, and have engaging conversations with them sharing each other the unique experience we have.
I will keep on going, as my journey still has a long way to go.
**There are some photos I took and posted on Google map. I invite you to have a glance at them.
