What does the Local Guides program mean to me?

Since I was a child, because of my brother who had an autoimmune disease that made him a wheelchair user, I wanted to help people, and what I saw most was people’s pious eyes.

Some of them even helped others just looked and whispered, but what my brother really wanted was to be able to do things without needing help, or even a place where his wheelchair would pass through the door, between the tables, that didn’t need to be carried to go to the bathroom.

What people like my brother want is dignity, and for that they need to know where they can go without depending exclusively on others to be able to do anything. Just like people in wheelchairs, there are also blind, deaf and other people with special needs.

So, being a Local Guide is being able to help everyone, and for me to be able to do it through an assessment or answering a question about the place is finally being able to help others, and this at least for me, makes me believe in a better world. For me it means making a child’s dream come true.

To my brother!
