I cannot remember the first time I added a photo, a place, or even made an edit on Google Maps, but I have been at it for a while now. I have had the privilege of traveling to most parts of my country (Kenya) and also two neighboring countries. It was easy and convenient to locate destinations that were already on Google Maps. This inspired me to start making contributions to make life easier for others. I love taking photos and therefore most of my contributions are images that have been viewed 400,000 times. I also enjoy making edits on local business details for the convenience of client and customers.
The most recent one was when I added a new business location in Nairobi, Kenya called Wrench 1 Autocare Ltd, owned by an acquaintance. He had recently started the vehicle service and repair shop for German cars. Unfortunately, clients who had been referred to the garage could not easily find the location. He mentioned it to me when I visited him at the garage. I then took out my phone and added the business on Google Maps right on the spot! After the addition had been approved, he posted on social media about it, expressing gratitude.
I make it easier for others to check out the places they are planning to visit. This includes places of interests like parks and hotels. When I post photos of these places, future visitors are able to get a glimpse of what they are like. I have also given reviews after nights spent at places of accommodation during my travels to manage expectations of future guests.
I appreciate how Google Maps notifies you of operating hours of the business you are visiting. Imagine going to a place that is already closed but you did not know prior simply because someone forgot to update an important detail. I have also made it a habit to correct and update such details.
