What does the Local Guides program mean me: Helping Others
Newton’s Third Law states that For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction. The Local Guides program worked for me in that way.
I got involved in the Local Guide program almost a year ago. To me, being a Local Guide means Helping others. I started working on Wikipedia in 2017 as a volunteer. My reason for working on Wikipedia is that I always wanted to contribute in my local language. While working on Wikipedia I got some opportunity to serve for my language. I met with Punjabi Wikimedia Community, attended some national and international conferences, met with people who are continuously working to make this world better. Working voluntarily has taught me that “When you start serving the society of your own free will, society serves you more than you do.” In between start contributing to Google Maps because there was a very small amount of data available on Google Maps regarding my town. Google Maps gave me the opportunity to make local content available on the internet, the content could be in the form of images, videos, text data etc.
Why I mentioned Newton’s Third Law states that For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction. Let me tell you my story. Six month ago I went to a wedding with my friends. None of us were aware about the town. Somehow we reached our destination, attended the wedding and we left the place. It was midnight and we were coming home. Mistakenly we took the wrong turn and after driving thirty kilometers we came to know that we were on the wrong track. All of us were a little scared because no one was there to guide us where to go and we were unaware of the place. That time I asked for directions from Google Maps and it helped us to reach home safely without getting lost. That’s why I feel that by contributing on Google Maps I help people and it helped me that night. Now wherever I go I click photos and upload on Maps, I correct the name if there are any mistakes, I review places and answer the questions. Working as a Local Guide makes me feel motivated and makes me responsible toward society that there are so many changes we need to bring in the world and platforms like Local Guide are one of the best place to start.?
