So I got to learn about being a guide by just having an Android phone which had my location turned on. Hence for every place I visited I was always asked by Google to rate it. It all started like a way to pass time, but I really got into it when I saw I got past level 1, 2 and then 3. I remember getting an email saying I (Duoseke pronounced as Doh-say-kay) was eligible for a pair of socks last year (though I never received it in the end ,you can blame it on the poor postal service in Nigeria), but that was just the boost I needed to realize that the little I was doing was getting noticed and I was helping people all around to know places of interest.
Being a local guide means people rely on the information I post out there, be it places to hangout for fun, a co-working space,a place of worship, a market or an eatery. This is because in Lagos, Nigeria it’s a bit difficult to get information especially for places that no one seems to know and there’s an in-city joke about how asking for directions in Lagos can be funny, when the person in trying to help you may eventually get you lost.
I knew my reviews would help someone out there who wants to try a new place but isn’t sure of what to expect in terms of pricing or accessibility. Lagos has so many places that are yet to be properly reviewed because so many people are a bit scared of having people place a face to the name of the reviewer, as many people just want to hide behind their phones and be unknown.I refuse to be unknown, I also refuse to let beautiful places go unknown and that’s why being a local guide is so important to me.
