Originally, I worked as a bus guide to talk about sightseeing spots, local food and culture.
I also like taking pictures of my travels, of meals in new restaurants and sharing knowledge. But I was not good at delivering these things on the internet.
Posting to Google Maps is very easy and straightforward, and when you post comments and photos, you will be proud when you see the number of reviews and find that your posts are useful to many people.
In 2019 I joined Connect Live, where I could learn even more about new features and how to communicate my information. I was impressed by the way local guides from around the world taught each other how to make Google Maps even better. It was the first time meeting many other local guides, but it was like meeting old friends.
After Connect Live, I was able to keep in touch with local guides in Japan and around the world, and participate in Japanese meetups via Skype.
By taking part in Connect Live, the way that I take pictures changed. I try to take pictures by thinking about how to clearly convey what I want to show. Through my photos I try to show useful information, such as if it is possible to drive a stroller or wheelchair. Or if it’s possible to work on a laptop in a cafe.
I always add not only English, but also Japanese notation, so that visitors to unknown lands can travel with confidence. I try to provide useful information to both the map viewer and the place provider. For example: What makes this place special?
Information is always changing. Sometimes situations happen which can make current information outdated quickly. I try to help keep it up to date so that visitors and locals don’t run into surprises.
After Connect Live, I carry my Pegman with pride, and have fun as a local guide at recommended places.
In the future, I would like to expand the circle of local guides in The Hague, the Netherlands, where I live.
