What alcohol to drink at Turkey

You should absolutely drink Raki at Turkey!

It is 40% alcohol . You should mix it like this: 1/3 raki and 2/3 water in a glass. It will get white.

Raki in the world:

Raki at Turkey is almost same as Ouzo in Greece but there is a slight difference between these two. This is because in Ottoman empire the greeks was producing and serving Raki to people. And greece was part of the Ottoman empire. So the Ottoman greeks, when separated their land and forming actual Greece, just called their drink Ouzo.

Also Pastis at France is kind of Raki with a different taste . I guess pastis is brought to France by the famous Turkish Ottoman Admiral Barbarossa (meaning red beard in Italian). He was known as a pirate in Europe, but in fact he was an admiral of the Ottoman Emperor. Marseille was a ship port he was frequently using. So that is maybe why brandname origin is marked as “Marseille” on the bottles of Pastis.

How to drink it:

In Turkey we drink raki different ways; by mixing it with water or soda or shalgam.

Shalgam makes the color of the raki red, and the taste is different.

You should drink maybe 2 at maximum for not getting drunk. After 4 you can consider having enough. More than 4 I cannot guarantee you get to home without a friend`s help.

When to drink

As a tourist you can drink anytime of the year in restaurants, bars, discos at any city of Turkey. They will serve it to you.

Getting drunk?

Like in all western countries, (muslim, christian or jewish) getting too much drunk in public is not well seen. But it is not a crime. You know there are family, little children around, and women and children don`t like the drunk people. So it is just a social thing, and not a crime at all at Turkey.

So during ramadan or other holly religious days, just get drunk in your hotel, it is best way to enjoy the evening.

At big hotels like in Antalya or Izmir Kusadasi Marmaris, there is no problem of getting drunk, because all around you are tourists. So ramadan or not will not make any difference to you there.

At Istanbul you can get drunk in most of touristic places too, but you know Istanbul is a world center of business and politics. And so at Istanbul just guarantee how you will get back to your hotel, get a taxi is better.

Every super touristic places of Anatolia in Turkey are easy places to get drunk, they will serve you raki without problem: for exemple Cappadocia is a super touristic place.

The Anatolian cities where there is less tourist, just only get drunk in your hotel, or do not get drunk, just 1 or two glass of raki is max advised. People may be a bit more conservative. Even me as turkish I drink or not drink at all, in central anatolian non touristic cities.

But in central anatolia, you can enjoy your stay with many different ways.

So last words; do not drink excessively, it can cause serious health problems.
