I wanted to highlight an issue I’ve come across repeatedly on Google Maps: many weigh bridges (or weigh stations) are being incorrectly categorized as “Transportation Services,” “Garages,” or “Truck Repair Shops.” This is misleading, as these places are specifically meant for checking the weight of commercial vehicles and ensuring regulatory compliance.
Accurate categorization matters — especially for truck drivers and logistics operators who rely on Maps to find these essential facilities. The correct category for these places should be “Weigh Station” or “Weighbridge” (depending on regional naming).
Here’s what we can do:
Use the “Suggest an Edit” option to correct the category when you find such miscategorized places.
Encourage accuracy in new listings by guiding local businesses or contributors when you can.
Since Yesterday I have suggested 28 edits for this correction out of which 24 gets approved while 4 gets rejected.
This isn’t the first time I’ve seen such issues — earlier, I observed many petrol pumps listed under “Petroleum Products Company” instead of “Petrol Pump” or “Gas Station.” I have also posted on this topic. Once I started flagging and suggesting edits, I was happy to see that around 99% of those locations were corrected based on my suggestions.

big problem in google map business category selection. Google has a specific list of categories. The exact wording you have in mind might not be available. You need to choose the most accurate and specific category from their predefined list. @LovePathak28
Thanks for pointing out the incorrect category of weighbridges on Google Maps. Most people are not aware of how to select the correct category on the map and this situation results.

Hi @VijendraPatidar . Yes for suggesting any edit the main problem comes in finding any place which requires edit. But after exploring maps Now I can easily find these places. That’s why I can even make 100 edits in just 30 mins too.

Yes @Ranu5g. Category selection is a big problem but a major problem is changing of category into their synonyms. For example some times before for adding petrol pump user has to select the category Gas Station. Both have same meaning but this creates confusion. That’s why many buisnesses selected the category petroleum products company. In this category also on the time of adding place user use to select Weigh Bridge category but after approval the category shows as Weigh Station. Google maps works on both British and American asscent of English but due to this most buisnesses chooses wrong category. @TusharSuradkar sir @NareshDarji sir correct me if I am wrong.

I recently came across a very similar issue in my area, related to Newsstands categorized as Publishers.
The error often comes from the fact that the sign shows the name of the most common newspaper in the area.
I am slowly fixing them all, I think that in my country (Italy) it will take thousands of edits to fix everything.

I have a plan. We can bring more categories in which user gets confused. We can create a post of all those categories of places in which user majorly selects the wrong one and will also tag some googlers by which this problems will highlight in front of them.

@LovePathak28 if you will start a post on that matter, I will gladly give you all the support I can. In fact, quite a big chunk of the LG points I earned on my way to level 10 were related to categories, most of them adding a better suited category to POIs
This kind of initiative is also very much related to a “campaign” I started several years ago: Local Guides Clean The Map (#LGCTM). The original post has almost 500 likes, and more than 500 comments, so feel free to check that out and make something similar about your idea. As you will see, I have also used that post to make lists of related posts, as a kind of overview (people than simply need to bookmark 1 single post).
It’s also funny that @ErmesT mentions problems with newspaper shops. In Dutch we have a problem with those too: the category name in Dutch includes the word for magazines (weekly or monthly publications) but not the word for newspaper (daily). The category name in Dutch is technically correct, but in the area where I live (Dutch speaking part of Belgium) people refer to these shops in spoken language as ‘newspaper shop’… the result is that quite a few are labeled e.g. ‘newspaper editor’.
If you start a post here, please do make sure to take into account the translations of the category names into local languages, as the problem is sometimes caused by incorrect or suboptimal translations (where the English term is fine).
And one final piece of advice: provide lots of details and don’t give up easily. I can testify personally that the Maps team does notice (y)our efforts and sometimes even take action to remedy the problem, as you can read in this example.
Hello @JanVanHaver sir. Here also In India weigh Bridge is known as Toll Kanta which is quite similar to Toll but have different pronounciation due to which user sometimes uses Toll station or Toll Booth category which is totally different.
We can bring some more problems an will create a post soon on all those categories on which user gets confused.
