I love using Google Maps to share information and images related to Natural Sciences! As a geologist I have been lucky to travel to such places as Antarctica, India, Kenya, and Alaska for research, and everywhere I go I have always used Maps, Earth, and Street View to see what to expect. I love help improve the visibility and accessibility of the natural world, so that people around the world, living our day to day lives, can have a richer understanding of the geology that allows us to thrive as individuals, and as a civilization.
In particular I love to post photos of geologic outcrops, some of which are famous tourist destinations, so that the whole world can see them. For example, the famous beach on the Oregon coast called Seal Rock State Recreation Site exists because it is protected by a large lava flow with columnar jointing that makes a beautiful background for beach-goers, and more importantly protects the sandy beach from eroding away! While many Google Map photos show folks enjoying the surf, mine focus on the relationships between the joyful experiences of a beach environment and the critical scientific context that has created that environment.
