Water in Enugu (Nigeria)

Sequence to my earlier post titled " The changing sources of water". Water is very essential in our day to day livelihoods. From time immemorial water sources have changed from one source to another in other to make humans consume hygienic water. In Enugu, we have many sources of water as good table water is hard or even impossible to source in Enugu Municipal.

Here, the major source of usuable water is the Well. Well which can be seen as one of the oldest source of water is what is still invoke in Enugu. Wells have been sunk traditionally by hand digging, as is still the case in rural areas.

It is the faster and easier way of getting usuable water in Enugu which due to a huge coal deposits beneath the ground makes it impossible to get a good borehole water which is free from contamination.

However, the processes if drawings water from Well here in Enugu has changed. Since the discovery of water pump. People do not normally use to draw water in the old traditional style of using fletcher or bucket. Nowadays, water pump (submersible pump) are inserted into the well and water is being pumped into storage tanks for domestic uses.

Nevertheless, good drinkable water are got from a nearby town (Ngwo) through water tankers and Reservoirs into Enugu Municipal. However, this water is got for a desirable amount of money. Thanks.

Feel free to ask any questions and take out some time to read about " The Changing Sources of Water "

P.S: This is my part of monthly topic of February initiated by Local Guide @HiroyukiTakisawa I also grant him permission to use this photos.

Hi @Austinelewex , I’m interested in learning how you get water for your needs.
In Bulgaria, almost every rural house has a well similar to yours, in the past they dug by hand, but now they use water drilling machines like the one in the video.

In my village of Riltsi, where I have a house 4-5 years ago, we called a machine to drill for water, the hole that drilled the machine is about 30 meters deep and uses a pipe 110 mm wide. we have lowered a submersible water pump into the pipe. Unlike my village, there is also a drilled water hole here at my workplace, but the difference is that the water pump is not submersible, but a hydrophore pump that stands outside and this whole thing is in a shaft with lids on top.
Here’s what it looks like

Bulgaria is a Balkan country with many mountains and we can not complain about the lack of water, we have 325 rivers and 6840 dams we have an exceptional wealth of hot mineral springs for healing treatments scattered throughout the country. This makes it a very popular destination for many tourists from all over Europe and the world. They are about 700 mineral springs and the temperature varies between 28 ° C and 91 ° C.

In general, this is what we have here in Bulgaria.

Best Regards!

Thank you for your detailed reply @mockata2 So much information contained in your comment that could make a post on how water is sourced in your country. I think we have the kind of water pump you post here on your comment which is not submersible. Here in University of Nigeria, Enugu campus we are in Dry season so the underground water table is low. Water in the well is not sufficient for the students so I am not actually an early bird :smile_cat: . For this reason I buy water everyday for my domestic use. Water vendors usually make sure there’s water for purchase. It is a very lucrative business in Enugu especially unlike other states in Nigeria. But during RAINING season the case is different.

Thanks

@Austinelewex It’s good to know how water got into your place. For my place, we got water from underground too. But now we use water from Water Supply Department and yes the water is from the main rivers in Thailand. Unfortunately I don’t have any photos to share. If I have a chance, I will take one and share with you. Thank you for tagging me. :slightly_smiling_face:
