The Washington DC area has a large diverse population of people. The deaf community has grown over the years thanks to Gallaudet University, a premier institution for deaf and hard- of- hearing. located in the heart of the city. This Starbucks location has greatly contributed to promoting deaf culture. The staff is fluent in American Sign Language to help patrons order their goodies without difficulty. Hearing patrons will need to write down their order. This is commonly the experience for someone who is deaf when ordering in a hearing environment. There is a large TV screen which displays your name when your order is ready. The furniture is set up to make it more convenient for people who are signing to see one another better. The lighting in the seating areas also help patrons see hand gestures more clearly. All of these features help someone who is deaf communicate better. People who are hearing can also learn a few signs through a large board which shows the hand shapes for the alphabet As you can see this is a special place where you can use your hands for more than just typing and holding your cup of joe!

I had no idea Starbucks had a store like this or made this type of commitment. What other restaurants in D.C. have this type of commitment to the deaf community?
This is such an awesome initiative! I am completely unfamiliar with the full list of obstacles for the people who can’t hear, see or have mobility issues however, seeing that big chains adapt their branches sounds exciting and I am even curious to see this plan in action. Do you know about more places in Washington like this one? (not a Starbucks, obviously 
)
