Walkabout on the James River

Walkabout on the James River

Ragged Island Wildlife Management Area

Ragged Island Wildlife Management Area, Carrollton, VA 23314, USA

March 17, 2018 @ 13:00 (EDT)

Right in the middle of the suburban sprawl and industrial expanses of Hampton Roads lies Ragged Island State Wildlife Management Area. It is a place to connect with a rugged and fluid landscape of vast marshlands and towering loblolly pines that once dominated the riverbanks along the James. This will be an afternoon of experiencing nature, gentle exercise and socializing. We will be updating Google Maps with pictures of the trail to share this amazing resource and get more people in the community out there enjoying it. Our route follows a boardwalk over the marsh, down the shore to Ragged Island and beyond. This venture may take an hour or up to two hours. Depending on the conditions and the group. It’s out and back route (4 miles max). For this St. Patty’s Day hike bug spray, long sleeves and pants along with waterproof shoes are recommended. If driving northbound on Highway 17, in Carrolton, take the last right before you cross the James River Bridge. There is a flashing yellow light there.
