This time we will introduce Wakamatsu Ward, Kitakyushu City.
Wakamatsu Ward is one of the busiest towns in the past, like Moji we introduced before.
Wakamatsu, which prospered as a shipping port for the Chikuho Coalfield and was Japan’s number one coal shipping port
It seems that there were various fashionable things because it was a town crowded with many people.
One of them is a Japanese style restaurant,called Ryotei.
The building of this restaurant is a tangible cultural property of the country.
Founded in 1895, Ryotei Kinnabe is loved by various celebrities and is still open.
It also features a bat motif on the window frame.

There was also a resort hotel operated by Nishi Nippon Railway, a company that represents Fukuoka Prefecture.
Many buildings from the Taisho era remain near the docks of Wakato Ohashi(Wakato Bridge) and Wakato Tosen(Wakato Ferry).
The Wakado Ohashi, which was built in 1962, was said to be the best suspension bridge in the Orient at that time.
You can’t walk across Wakado Ohashi because it’s a motorway, but it’s recommended because you can see a nice window when you take a bus.

Breakwater protected by Japanese Navy destroyers
In order to protect Wakamatsu’s Dokai Bay from the rough seas of the Hibiki Nada, Yanagi, Fuyutsuki, and Suzutsuki, who had finished their roles as destroyers after World War II, were sunk as breakwaters.
Nowadays it’s a lively place for people who love fishing.

As an academic research city / eco-town
Since around 2000, as an academic research city of Kitakyushu, we have been trying to integrate the research departments of universities, research institutions, and companies on the same campus.
In addition, this area is also involved in businesses that aim to “finally reduce waste to zero” as an eco-town.
The area is very windy and there are many windmills.

Kamaboko store that lasts 100 years
Fried fish paste is called Kamaboko in this area.
The local Kamaboko store that serves freshly fried food is still busy with orders today.

今回は北九州市若松区を紹介します。
若松区も以前紹介した門司と同様、過去は非常に賑わった町のうちの1つです。
筑豊炭田の積出港として繁栄し、日本一の石炭積出港だった若松
沢山の人で賑わった町だから様々な流行りものがあったようです。
そのうちの1つが料亭。
この料亭の建物は国の有形文化財です。
1895年に創業した料亭金鍋は様々な著名人に愛され、現在も営業しています。
窓枠のコウモリのモチーフも特徴です。
また福岡県を代表する企業、西日本鉄道が運営するリゾートホテルも有りました。
若戸大橋、若戸渡船の船着き場付近は大正時代からの建物も多く残っています。
1962年にできた若戸大橋は当時東洋一の吊橋と言われていました。
若戸大橋は自動車専用道なので歩いて渡ることはできませんが、バスに乗ると素敵な車窓が見ることができるのでおすすめです。
日本海軍の駆逐艦が守っている防波堤
若松の洞海湾を響灘の荒波から守るために、第二次世界大戦の後、駆逐艦として役割を終えた柳、冬月、涼月がに防波堤として沈められました。
今は釣りが大好きな人々で賑わう場所です。

学研都市・エコタウンとして
2000年前後から北九州学術研究都市として、大学や研究機関、企業の研究部門を同一キャンパスに集積する試みを行っています。
またエコタウンとして「最終的に廃棄物をゼロにすること」を目指す事業にも取り組む地域です。
このエリアは非常に風が強いので風車がいっぱいあります。
サイクリングも盛んですが、風という強敵が行く手を阻むことも！！
100年続く蒲鉾店
揚げたてを出してくれる地元の蒲鉾店は今日も注文で大忙し。
若松は探せば探すほど色んなものが見つけられます。
